Does anyone know how AmeriCorps members can take the GRE for free?

I have heard several times that it can and has been taken for free. I
am interested in figuring out how AmeriCorps members were able to take
the exam free of charge.

Let me know!

I've posted this question on the VISTA Campus (online forum for
VISTAS), and I'll let you know what I hear. Until I find an exact
answer I'll share with everyone what I found is a few google searches:

WACC - http://www.wacampuscompact.org/vista/faqs.shtml#
Idealist GRE Study Tips & more -

ETS - GRE Fee Reduction - http://www.ets.org/gre/revised_general/about/fees/reductions/

I assume that because you need to complete the FAFSA before applying
for a GRE fee reduction, than the amount will only be reduced
according to their calculations from the FAFSA report. In my own
inquires with graduate school programs about application fee waivers
it's a similar process where you fill out something like a "proof of
being low-income form" and submit it to the admissions office.
Sometimes the fee is only partially reduced and other times it is
completely waived.

I'll keep you posted on what else I hear.

To anyone interested in taking the GRE in 2012...
Information about requesting a GRE Fee waiver is below. VISTA's can
find this information in the VISTA manual at http://vistacampus.org.
It may be the same policy for other AmeriCorps programs; best to check
in with the University you plan to apply to. If anyone has success or
challenges with this process please share it with the group!

GRADUATE RECORD EXAMINATION FEE WAIVER

The Educational Testing Service, which administers the GRE (Graduate
Record Examination) makes available to colleges and universities, a
limited supply of discounts and waivers. The decision to discount or
waive the fee is up to the college or university to which you apply.
To request a GRE fee discount or waiver, contact the financial aid
office of the educational institution that interests you and tell them
about your experience serving as an AmeriCorps VISTA member.
