Unknown File segments got created ?

The file (segments) is created in the drive as shown below
<drive>:\home\liferay\lucene\liferay.com\segments
For eg : if i install the dimension server in E:
then the file (segments) will be in location E:\home\liferay\lucene
\liferay.com\segments
Can anyone explain what is this file and why it is created ?
