We learned yesterday that one of our donors received a call from an individual presenting himself as a representative of American Friends of Magen David Adom (AFMDA) and asking for an immediate donation by credit card. The scammer presented himself as “Rabbi Weiss” and when the donor refused to give the caller her credit card, he hung up on her. The donor let us know about the call and we immediately reported the incident to the FBI. This is why I am reaching out to you today.
Magen David Adom is the frontline in the coronavirus fight in Israel and it’s not surprising that unscrupulous people would try to capitalize on MDA’s heroic efforts. Our fundraisers are calling our donors to check on how they are doing and to update them on MDA’s leading role in the crisis. No AFMDA staff person or lay leader would ever demand a gift from a donor. Our first concern is your wellbeing and secondly to share information about MDA’s extraordinary work. If you receive a call from someone purporting to be from AFMDA, ask them to demonstrate to your satisfaction that they are indeed from AFMDA.
