There is now only one “unknown” to complete the roll call! Weapons are of course 9MM MPK SMG and FN rifle. MPK’s were issued to Provost TF’s for a short time at one stage. Incidentally, I also have hard copy of this photo and it has been on my FB page since May 2010. Alan and I also did a TF camp together in Gwelo (Gweru) in the ‘70’s and he may recall that we drove down to the Midlands town in my Alfa Romeo at the time. I recall that Alan worked for Standard Bank at the time. I believe that Don Pretorius passed away some years ago because he, like me was also living in Durban. I think Alan now lives in East London or PE. Back Row: John Curtis, Perry Venturas, Rob Thorn, Gerry Costello. Centre Row: Possibly Mac Wemys, Alan Harris, Steve Harvey. Unknown. Front: Don Pretorius. The book, to me, was an easy read, the required information and facts are included but they do not overwhelm and confuse the reader. From a personal note, many thanks to all the folk that were involved on this operation, the size and intensity opened my eyes. Further details on the book can be obtained by eMailing Ian on ian.p...@iafrica.com REMEMBER COMMEMORATION DAY - 2nd September 2012. Keith Nell (RhArmy) Writes:- With only two months to go, its reminder time of this most important historical day to be attended by world media. We need EVERY person who could possibly be there to join us in a show of mass solidarity for Rhodesia's stand-alone fight against marxist terrorists who savaged the Country and massacred our brave civilians for political gain. Please be there to pay tribute to the 107 Victims of the Viscount massacres and also to the very many other brave civilians brutally murdered during the course of the Rhodesian bush war....the tribesfolk, the farmers, the missionaries, the school children, the tourists....WE SHALL REMEMBER THEM ALL. Many thanks, Keith and the Viscount Team ROGER WATT UPDATE Roger will be proceeding on retirement shortly and taking up residence in Somerset West in the Cape. Our best wishes to Roger and Dawn on the move and retirement. Enjoy it Roger. APPRECIATION Cliff Potter thanks all that sent him mail on the very sad loss of his son.ORAFs would also like to thank you all - Cliff was a special guy to us Jam Stealers. PASSING OF PETER MAXWELL Bryan Jarman (RhAF) Writes:- I have recently heard of the passing of Peter Maxwell. Peter was an honorary member of many messes in the security forces. He will I’m sure be well remembered by many servicemen for providing superb entertainment. Peter told me once that he was booked on Viscount flight RH 827 that was shot down. Whilst at the airport awaiting the ill fated flight he received a phone call to go to Victoria Falls to do a show, his ticket was changed at the last minute. He said he never quite got over the tragedy and how close he came to being on board. He had an incredible love of Rhodesia and its people. Peter will indeed be missed in the entertainment world, and I’m sure be well remembered by many Rhodies. BIRTHDAY ERROR Ken Salter Writes:- My D.O.B ( Dozy Old B*****D ) is 3/3/30. Cliff Potter and I share the same birthday but he is a year older. Oops sorry Uncle Ken WILLIAM ROBERT KILEY (RIFLE SHOTTIST - 1904-1981 Pete Jones (RhAF) Writes:- I remember Bill well from when he ran F Group in the stores. I did not know he was a shottist, let alone an outstanding one. Mind you he was always meticulous in whatever he did. When he left New Sarum he was well over retirement age and my favourite story about him was probably his second last act. He had been transferred from the main store to the publications and forms store; I don’t remember what its official tittle was, maybe APF? Before long he had transformed it into a model of efficiency and he was as happy as a pig in “you know what” down in the old canteen building between H Block of the Airmen’s Mess and the SWO’s house. Then came the day when he was told he had to move up to the Station HQ building due to station politics engineering the move of, I think, the Security Training School into the building. This was it for BIll; he told his OC, Sqn Ldr Alec Bell,if I remember correctly, that if he was forced to move into the Technical Area he would go on leave pending retirement. As usual, this was laughed off and Bill boxed everything up for the move, supervised the loading on to vehicles and then handed in his leave and retirement notices. It was a fair amount of time before I visited the forms store but the poor lady who had been appointed to run it had still not been able to unpack all the boxes. Never interfere with an efficient person who is past retirement age. It brought to mind my connection with a couple of SAAF members that I knew. “Piggy” Boyle flew one of the Gladiators in that area, and my long standing friend Gerry Matchett was an erk based at Marsabit, a lonely outpost in those days. Piggy went on to high rank and was the O.C. when I attended Central Flying School at Dunnottar in 1953. Gerry became a close friend from the model aeroplane club days and a pioneer gliding pilot; he accomplished much in life working for Shell and eventually in retirement was the Mayor of Fish Hoek. HUGE CONTROVERSY Brian (Crack-One), Goodwin. Writes:- My waterfall pictures have certainly stirred things up, I have had correspondence from 22 people already and they are divided between the Pungwe and the Matarazi falls, with the majority going for the Matarazi and a few saying I have pics of both. The best thing of it is that I am now in contact with people I knew many years ago one guy in fact who was at Halton with me and I last saw in my RAF secondment days in 1960!
