REMEMBRANCE DAY
Sybil Nelson Writes:-
As Remembrance Day is fast approaching and I will once again be laying a Wreath in Memory of the Rhodesians who gave their lives for Brittan in the First and Second World Wars, I would like to know the follow. That is if there are any records.

This covers Land Sea and Air.

How many Rhodesians served and Died in the First World War?
How many Rhodesians served and Died in the Second World War?
Are there any records?
In Plymouth there is an impressive monument to the Air Men who lost their lives. I read with pride and sadness, Rhodesia and South Africa.
Thanks for any help that may be available.

MISSING RhAF OFFICER
Bernie Collocott (RhAF) Writes:-
have a favour to ask on behalf of Jean Fletcher (Brian Fletchers widow.)
The Fletchers and Quirks were good friends during our Rhodie Air force days and their kids grew up together. Tom's son, Paul Quirk also joined the Air Force in the 70's. Jean Fletcher is trying to contact Paul, she believes he might be living in Australia. Jean would really appreciate any news you might have on Paul Quirk.

PARACHUTED SAPPERS
Derek de Kock (RhAF) Writes:-
In 1961 whilst a number of us were doing our training at RAF Abingdon to become Parachute Jumping Instructors, as part of our training, we went to Old Sarum to observe a heavy drop. On this occasion the drop was from a Beverley and consisted of a steel platform onto which was strapped a Land Rover and trailer. The Land Rover and trailer were mounted on a large # of vertical pipes with bits of wood sticking out of the pipe ends. These bits of pipe and wood were designed to absorb the shock by having the wood driven into the pipes when the contraption hit the ground. In addition there were a large # of what looked like kitbags which dropped out from under the platform which burst on landing also acting as shock absorbers. The whole contraption came out of the back of the Beverley and was suspended by 4 sixty foot .parachutes. It actually worked but one parachute failed to deploy .This made little difference to the actual landing speed but the parachutes failed to disconnect from the platform after landing and it would have been an interesting day if there had been a wind blowing on the ground.

The thing that got to me on that day was that the platform had to be recovered and was considered as a valuable and attractive item. I also discovered that the French did the same thing and just used bits of wood which were written off and everything dropped had to be useful to the troops on the ground. I took note of this fact and later the only things we had to recover were the parachutes and automatic opening devices used on free fall drops

Alan Harris Writes:-
Hi Eddy – passed this on to a mate with a son in the Brit Army; as you can see its much appreciated.

Rob Grice Writes:-
This article had a very warm welcome from present OC Para Engr. Sqdn. ( see comments ) -- sent to Kelvin who past it on. Rob.

1ADSR-RHQ RegtOps Offr Writes:-
Closing this loop.
See below direct from OC 9 Para Sqn RE. I also had a reply from CRE Chief Royal Engineer 1 Div HQ as seen at CC below.
This sort of stuff is gold for them they probably have this archived, but nice to show the current incumbents.
This article will probably be seen by all 9 Para Sqn RE.

J L Clark | Maj | OC 9 Para Sqn RE | 23 Engr Regt (Air Asslt) Writes:-
That's fantastic.
Thank you very much for taking the time to forward this on.
It will come in very handy with a couple of pieces of work we are engaged in at the minute. The first, writing the latest round of the Sqn history, and the second, as we develop our theatre-entry capability as part of the Airborne Task Force.
Hope all' is well in Herford.
Thanks again.

THE WAR IN RHODESIA
Rex Taylor (RhAF) Writes on the article ORAFs circulated:-

The site of the photo was an opening in the Msasa bush near PE dam. The same site was frequently used for photo shoots of deplaning troops. There is an oft reprinted one of an envelopment exercise in the same clearing! I believe that the selection of the site was due to John Barnes and Murray Hofmeyr. In the 1990’s I used to drive along the new tarmac road that led from Chitungiswa/ PE dam road to Marondera. This site and several others we used to use for training, hovering patterns, tight circuits, auto rotations and low flying were now devoid of tree cover! Sad!

I am sure the picture has been printed in reverse, - surely this is the port side of the aircraft? Midway down the fuselage is an oblong object, I’m sure its not part of the aircraft!

Ian Doig (RhAF) also advised of the error, his concern was that the Alouette had no Pilot!

The photo was the wrong way on the Scope Supplement

LAURY GERBER NEWS
Laury (RhAF) Writes:-
On my birthday I was having extreme difficulty speaking. I went to Bergamo Hospital but I was referred to a hospital in Milano. The neurosurgeons advised that the problem referred back to the stroke that I had 5 years ago. They gave me various tests for 9 days then released me with a prescription for Asprin and heaven knows what else. The good news is that they think the problem in my brain will clear up in about a year.
My daughter Tannith is hoping to be able to send me back to Zimbabwe in about a month.

Eddie, please advise ORAFS of this and advise them of my e mail address.

SLATTERS and JANEKES IN FRANCE
Ray Haakonsen (RhAF) Writes of the recent photos distributed:-
How great to see the pics of these two amazing men and their wonderful wives. I did not know Tol Janeke that well when I served in the Air Force but I knew he was a great leader and was highly respected by so many as the "grapevine goes". Hugh Slatter was an amazing leader and human being. I was privileged to be on the best cadet course (29 PTC) to ever go through the ranks of the Rhodesian Air Force (He he), and he was our course commander when we were the first cadet course to train on Imps at Langebaan in 1976. He had to try keep us "secret" and contained as a course, together with his intrepid instructors, including Steve Baldwin, Tony Oakley, Dave Thorne and others. This was not an easy task with guys like Lamb, Oborne, Kidson, Le Roux, Tucker, Thomas, Griffiths etc...some whom are amazingly still trusted with flying machines today, with mega passengers on board nogal!!!!

What great memories and what amazingly brave and dedicated men (and equally amazing woman) during such a tumultuous time in the history of that beautiful nation. Seeing Hugh and Jane and the Janekes in such good spirit and apparent health brings incredible joy to my heart.

Bless you all and may you continue to enjoy all that life has to offer.

Warmest regards and God bless to all.

Toffer (RhAF) Writes:-
Regarding the above photo…..the women are still looking good but I don’t know about the two old men with them…ha..ha

ADVERT: MATCHLESS MOTOR CYCLES
Steve Norris (RhAF) Writes:-
Great to have this memory refreshed. Many thanks to Ian Harper and all. Much appreciated. These bikes are iconic in relation to my childhood and service years.

Ron Janson (RhAF) writes:-
Thornhill had Matchless motorcycles. I rode one as escort to a convoy from Thornhill to Gatooma (Gweru)

Dave Stone (RhAF) Writes:-
Saw the ''Matchless'' advert of yore, which immediately brought back good memories.
I bid for one of those venerable old 500cc ex BSAP 'thumpers' at a CMED sale in Gwelo circa 1964. I recall bidding against quite a tough looking lady who could have kick started anything. I won the bidding at 40 pounds, which was a lot for the time, but it was all together & in fair nick. It reliably ferried me round the Midlands for a couple of years & took me to Durbs & back. Wish I still had it, though I may have had to enlist a bit of help with kick starting scene now !!

Ted Barnard (RhAF) Writes:-
Yes, the Air Force did have 350cc Matchless motorcycles. All the Provost / Doghandlers who joined in January 1964 learned to ride them.

Rhett Gardener (RhAF) Writes:-
Did you know??? ..... that the Shona word for a motorbike is "mdududu" which was derived onomatopoeically from the sound of the Matchless 500cc much favoured by the BSAP on rural patrols.

[My source is Father George Fortune SJ who lectured me in Shona at the University College of Rhodesia and Nyasaland.]

MERCY FLIGHT
ORAFs picked up this note from a Rhodesian Railways Magazine dated January 1963:-
When Mr. Forbes Lewis. Chargeman Coppersmith, was taken seriously ill at his home in Umtali an R.R.A.F. helicopter was despatched from the capital lo take him from the Umtali Hospital to the Salisbury Hospital. At the time of writing his condition was still serious.

Does anyone recall this incident and perhaps the aircrew will have details in their log books.

Ian and I are enjoying Kilimanjaro lager. Others here are Serengeti and Safari (what else would they be called) all really good beers. Castle is also brewed here by SAB and Tusker from neighbouring Kenya is also pretty good. A very large variety of imported beers are readily available like Heineken and, my favourite, Windhoek lager.
So anyone thinking of visiting us, you won't go thirsty!

CENTRAL AFRICAN AIRWAYS 'SKYBUS' SERVICE
John Mussell (RhAF) Writes:-
Regarding the photo of Ken Hanson buttering up passengers on the Skybus, the passenger on the left looks like Bob Woodward. Possible confirmation is that he seems to be wearing an Air Force tie, but not being in good focus, it could be that I am mistaken. Also the fellow under the captain's left armpit has a familiar face. Perhaps the photo was posed and the photographer (maybe one of ours from New Sarum) grabbed a few locals from both sides of the runway to act as passengers.

John Redfern (Rhodesian Army) Writes:-
I wonder if any of ORAFS readers remember Air Rhodesia's "Super 66" tours in 1979-80?

As I recall, one could fly in a Viscount from Salisbury to Vic Falls, spend one night in the Vic Falls hotel, then fly on to Kariba (I can't remember if it was an overnight stop - I think it was) and back to Salisbury. The ticket cost R$66. This was excellent value for money.

Thanks for the mail on Ken Hansen... I also flew with him in the good old/ bad old days!
I was sent a mail with pics of the Air Rhod / CAA hosties, but couldn't download them... and my PC is grumbling about " suspicious " files !

Did you get my mail about Bob Hill ?

I also had comms recently with Mark Harvey... son of Dave Harvey... ex Capt with Air Rhod and CAA... legendary man!

The Harvey's Snr are living in UK happily and also have comms with Robin Hood who also lives there .... it seems as tho all us "Rhodies " are going back to our " roots " since our parent's new " roots " failed with the Mugabe regime !!

Mark Harvey is a Training Capt with Emirates, and has been with them for 24 years ! Shriek ! I knew that guy in junior school !

I met Dare in 1979 when I was transferred to Rio Tinto Management Services in Johannesburg, we became good friends. I have always been besotted with anything that flew, and here was someone that had flown Spitfires! If I remember correctly they were the last operational Spitfires in the world. After I left Johannesburg we continued our fortnightly chaps on the 'phone and then one day I couldn't get hold of him - I'll miss him! RIP Bruffies!

RHODESIAN SCHOOL BADGES
David Livingstone
Rex Taylor (RhAF) Writes:-
I went to David Livingstone school in the 1940’s, it was during WWII and the “threat” of aerial bombing was taken seriously. I remember the “air raid drill” we had to walk, -NOT run, - to some trenches on the Livingstone Avenue side of the soccer fields. Over THIRTY years later I was in the Air Force Photo Interpretation Section and looked at aerial photos of the school through the stereoscope. Although large trees then covered the area, one could still make out the outlines of the 1940 trenches! Looking back, the disciplined drill was probably a show of patriotism and solidarity with the citizens of London rather than any real danger. At that time Germany was poised to invade Britain and “The Blitz” was in progress.

In the 1970’s I always made it known that if any new boyfriend brought either of my daughters home late, another shallow ditch in the chicken run would have to be filled in! Aerial photography would not locate those trenches because a multi-roomed out-house now occupies the site of the old chicken run and some low mounds!

Peter Watson (PRAW) Writes:-
Peter Marchussen was Copper 43 and Peter Walton was Copper 44.

Graham Andrews Writes:-
sent the picture of the PRAW pilots training in Masvingo to my mate Peter Walton who in turn sent it on to his mate Peter Marchussen. They were both PRAW pilots, COPPER 44 and COPPER 45.

Peter & Janet Marchussen reply to Graham
No that picture was not at Masvingo it was at Thornhill we went on a course there. Why I am sure is the hunters could not land at Masvingo and wouldn’t have a reason to either. That might be you, I can’t really recognise you or me???

HARRY SMITH
Mike Hamence (RhAF) Writes:-
Funny ol' world, as Derek Field (RhAF) would say...
I last saw Harry Smith at LGW (London- Gatwick Airport) very early in the morning of November 21, 1986. I was in transit to Gibraltar from Jeddah.
Harry, together with John Ludgater (He who managed to collect 180-plus chunks of 'Mini Golf' when it detonated prematurely under his Cessna FTB337 'Linx', and an Affretair DC8 Captain - his name escapes me, but in the mid-80s, he had a video outlet next to the cinema in Avondale Shopping Mall) were transiting to Amsterdam, where Len George was clearing damage to a DC8.
Well, aviators do meet up all over the world!

RHODESIAN SCHOOL BADGES
David Livingstone School
Philip Clarke Writes:-

Further to the note from Gus (who is older than me) yes us old boys and girls will never forget the days at DL.

You mention Mrs. Pike and Mrs. Tapson two wonderful Ladies who I’m sure we all remember with affection. Unfortunately I was never fortunate enough to have them as teachers but as my years were the same as their sons, John and David respectively our paths crossed many times. I last saw Mrs. Pike out at Lake Chivero at John’s chalet and she remembered me in an instant although some 20 years had passed.

Other teachers that come to mind were Mr. Moffatt a direct descendant of Robert and Mr. Leonard, Miss Kenny – music?

I was back in Zimbabwe for a brief visit last year and having had lunch just across the road from the school decided to take another quick look around.

Its nice to see the big grounds with a swimming pool etc but the school seemed so small, mind you I was only about 4½ ft tall and 20 Kgs in those days.

AIR FORCE WATERING HOLE
Rex Taylor (RhAF) Writes:-
Wonderful picture, - it tells a story!

I wonder where the bar counter is now? It is good to see that the gentlemen are drinking their beer from mugs! (Hopefully, the barman was spoken to!) The station wagon in the background was possibly a Ford V8, in 2011 it would be sought-after classic. Is the beer Egyptian?

I’m mounting my third crusade to bring the Aussies to appreciate that beer is best from a glass! Under operational conditions a mug is permitted!

Rex - we hope that you and Evelyn have a wonderful time in Australia. Eddy

NOTE FROM ORAFs
My sincere thanks to all those that send in articles and reply to the many questions asked. Be assured your support is greatly appreciated.

I loved John Graham's comment regarding incorrect information being recorded on the back of the photo of the PRAW Aircrew. ORAFs was recently warned about a copyright infringement on a scanned copy of a photo sent to me - I was expected to know who had taken the photo!

I would like to advise all that ORAFs still remains independent of other associations. ORAFs will be cutting back on the support of research teams, I believe the Facebook and other social networks are a better beat than ORAFs
