A Good Day to You All,

Rhodesian Schools – Forces Memorial

The Annual Rhodesian Forces Memorial at Dickie Fritz MOTH Shellhole, Edendale, Johannesburg has,

during the past few years, seen a few Rhodesian High School Old Boy/Girl groups attend this annual memorial

and lay a wreath in remembrance of the ultimate sacrifice made by our fellow school pupils during “Rhodesian War’s,”

to honour and remember them.

As school pupils during the 70’s, we finished school and shortly thereafter

were called up for National Service with many signing up and becoming regulars in one of the Rhodesian Forces.

Our Rhodesian era came to an abrupt end with Zimbabwe’s Independence on the 18th April 1980.

Not too long thereafter a very large number of Rhodesians left for all corners of the world.

Whilst we remember our fellow pupils who died in service of Rhodesia via the various Forces Rolls of Honour,

we’ve generally never had the opportunity to formally remember and honour them via old boy/girl school Rolls of Honour

at an appropriate memorial service, such as the Rhodesian Forces Memorial.

This is our motivation for joining this memorial and to remember our fellow pupils

who were our class mates, played sports with, hung out with, grew up with, fought the war with

and who died whilst in service of Rhodesia at a very young age, mostly in their late teens/early twenties - so that we could live !

If you’d like to attend the memorial service for the laying of a Prince Edward School wreath then:

• Communicate this to Patchy Simmonds at roofspe...@telkomsa.net or via whatever means you can.

• Raise +- R600.00 to buy a wreath, have it made up to attach the Roll of Honour

Your attendance will be greatly appreciated.

Let’s make this a truly memorable Prince Edward School and Old Hararians Memorial occasion.

Donations towards our Wreath will be graciously received.

Our Banking details, below.

Look forward to as many as possible of us to join together for this significantly memorable occasion

Research; Flt. Lt. Blackwell, S.J.F.
ORAFs received the following request; I'm researching Flt SJP Blackwell DFC who served with 266sq during WW2.
I have information that he flew in combat up until 17th August 1944 and he forced landed a Mustang on 2nd January 1945, this spurred my interest as this happened close to where I live.
He relinquished his RAF commission on 8th August 1946. "On appointment to Southern Rhodesian forces".
I would really like to find out what happened to him after the war and if he has since passed away.
Any suggestions how to find this information would be gratefully received
.

If anyone has information that can aid Leslie kindly write to me at ora...@gmail.com  Thank you.

Many thanks Neville, a great setting for the photo.

Armament Assistance.
Steve McLean writes; With the assistance of one of the men actively involved in RhAF armament R&D I’m busy putting an article together for an international aviation magazine. It’s a story that’s never received the recognition so richly deserved, and I believe it’s about time the ingenuity of the folks involved is recognised.

The text portion is largely complete, however it’s lacking relevant images. Would you perhaps be able to assist with a call via the ORAF’s newsletter?

Of particular interest are photographs of armed Hunters, Camberras, Vampires and / or Lynxes;

20lb fragmentation bombs, FRANTANS, Alpha bombs, Golf bombs, Mini Golf bombs, ‘Michelin Man’ bombs, the ‘Flechette’;

Aerial views of the operational sides of Thornhill and / or New Sarum Air Force Stations.

Any assistance you or the members could give would be greatly appreciated.

ORAFs members in Scotland.
I have had a request from Stretch Merrington living in Scotland who is asking for contact details (phone) for any ex Air Force member also living in Scotland. Stretch would like to call and perhaps reconnect/reach out to any old  military
friends or even school friends.

Stretch is ex Security and served at both Thornhill and New Sarum.

Please contact me at ora...@gmail.com and I will put you in touch with Stretch or alternatively forward your details and I can forward to Stretch.

JB's Canadian Trip.
Shumba and I were over the moon when JB and Emil decided to visit us in September this year for two weeks. It was a whirlwind trip that started off with a long, did I mention long wait at the Vancouver Air Port whilst JB was detained in secondary!! Yup all this over a nineteen footsek tattoo JB has done in the UK back in his wild heydays! Anyhow after much anticipation there he was and it was super to see the old friends re united again. Many escapades, a few tears and plenty of laughter was had as countless folk and adventures were reminisced.  Shumba, JB and Emil did a four day Rockies trip, and Shumba got to show them some really spectacular sights. One interesting point in the trip was how life unfolds - If anyone had said to these two burly 7 Sqd guys 40 years ago that one would end up at the South Pole for a bit and the other two season up near the North Pole it would have been unbelievable and yet it took place - as far from Rhodesia as you could get! I can tell you many ears must have been burning up for those two weeks.
Thanks JB and Emil for coming all this way - it was truly lovely to have you both here and we wish the trip could have been just a little longer.
