MONTY MAUGHAN
Vic Mackenzie writes and includes a newspaper cutting of the tragic incident:-
Thought I would let you know a bit of the background of Monty Maughan. Monty was a very serious bike rider having won many races in his age group both regionally and nationally. He worked for the FAA in Oklahoma City. He was also at school with me at Allan Wilson. - Vic

Fatal cyclist collision in Oklahoma City
OKLAHOMA CITY – Last night a group of four cyclists and a 67 year old cyclist traveling in opposite directions collided. The 67 year old man, Monty Maughan was transported to the hospital in critical condition. Two other cyclists were also transported to the hospital in good condition. Monty Maughan died as a result of the collision. The incident happened near Lake Hefner, in Oklahoma City, OK. It is unknown if the collision happened on public streets or on a multi-use path at the Lake.

Monty Maughan, 67, was a member of OKC Velo Club. He has two sons and a daughter. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

Colin Bond (RhAF) Sent a newspaper cutting  which reads:-

Man dies after bicycling crash at lake
(Extracted from The Oklahoman, Page 16, Thursday May 3, 2012)

FROM STAFF REPORTS
A man involved in a collision with two members of a bicycling team at Lake Hefner has died, police said. Police said Bernard Maughan, 67, was bicycling west at the Lake Hefner Dam about 7 p.m. Tues- day  when he collided with two of four bicyclists traveling east. Lara O'Leary, spokeswoman for the Emergency Medical Services Authority, said a man was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Police  said Maughan later died from his injuries.

Different names given
Members of the Oklahoma City Velo Racing club identified the man as Monty Maughan, of Oklahoma  City, on the organization's Facebook page. One of Maughan's sons, Bernard Maughan, wrote about his father's death on his page, saying, "My father was my big brother, my friend, my teacher and my hero.  Most of all though, he was my Dad. Driven to provide for and better the lot of his family, he was loyal,  steadfast, opinionated and true to his code. We'll miss you Dad."

Bernard Maughan Writes:-
I just picked up Mom's email and noticed that Mom mistyped my email address, which is Bern...@starhub.net.sg

We have been overwhelmed by the warmth and generosity of spirit in the responses from the communities that Dad had been a part of. Thanks very much to you and all the ORAFS for remembering Monty.

LANCASTER BOMBER
Len Pink (RhAF) Writes:-
Seeing Derek de Kock's piece on the Lancaster brought to mind the 1962 bombing competition in Cyprus when 5 Sqn. cleaned up the R.A.F. squadrons. At the end of the detachment I was given permission to go on leave to the UK to join my family who had flown over by Comet.

I managed to get a lift to Malta in a R.A.F. Canberra. At Luqua I met up with a R.A.F. crew who were ferrying a Lancaster back to England from Singapore on its way to being put on the scrap heap. I was offered a lift, and having been kitted out with a parachute and Mae West we set off low level across the Med. After dozing fitfully for several hours in the bowels of the aircraft I was invited to earn my trip and pop up to the front and pinpoint our position as we crossed the French coast (no Sat Nav in those days). The Topo map bore no resemblance to what I was seeing and the angle of the coast was wrong. We were in fact crossing the French coast just east of Perpignan. The rest of the trip was uneventful and we duly arrived in Cornwall, landing at St.Eval. The return trip was much slower courtesy of Union Castle, Southampton to Cape Town

ANZAC DAY AND THE LANCASTER BOMBER
Gary Wade (RhAF) Writes:-
With the onset of Anzac day we were treated here in Aust. to a lot of WWII TV presentations. One was ‘Bomber Boys’ hosted by the McGregor brothers, Ewan the actor and Colin the Ex RAF pilot.

Colin was with the Dam Busters Squadron during his service. At one point in the story they visited a WWII Museum in London, I think, and the man in charge was Flt Lt Ian Smith.

Incidentally my son-in-law’s father was a gunner on a Lancaster in WWII, one of the few that survived.

So sad they weren’t honoured until last year.

ALEX McBARNET EX RAF WW2
Alan Roodt Writes:-
Here on Maui in Hawaii is a Family by the name of McBarnet.

Alex McBarnet was a Pilot in the RRAF during W.W.II.
Alex passed away about 4/5 years ago here on Maui and on occasion he did share the odd snippet of his flying during W.W.II.

Alex is survived by two Son's and his Wife Mary Jane here on Maui. They may or may not be members of ORAF's.

I was wondering if anyone would be able to dig up any pictures and information on Alex McBarnet during his years in the RRAF in the 40's and send them to me.

I would like to surprise the Family.

One of the Son's Terry is married to Sam Whalleys daughter, Gill. Sam was a cabinet minister during ID's years.

Solid family and I would like to share some history & information with them.

One of the most hilarious stories which I thought so typical of those young RRAF W.W.II survivors was.
At the end of the WAR, Alex had decided to tour around parts of Asia/India on a Motorcycle.
Alex had met Mary Jane his wife I believe in India where MJ worked for the US State department/Embassy/Consul?
Alex proceeded to ride his motorbike up and into the Lobby of this Embassy/Consul or? To pick up MJ was one story that amused the hell out of me. One can only imagine the reactions.
I hope members can help put some of the history of his flying years together form me.

Warmest Aloha

SMILE A WHILE
Arthur is 90 years old. He has played golf every day since his retirement 25 years ago.

One day he arrives home looking downcast.
"That's it," he tells his wife. "I'm giving up golf. My eyesight has got so bad. Once I've hit the ball, I can't see where it went."

His wife sympathizes. As they sit down, she has a suggestion: "Why don't you take my brother with you, and give it one more try."

"That's no good," sighs Arthur. "Your brother is a hundred and three. He can't help."

"He may be a hundred and three," says the wife, "but his eyesight is perfect."

So the next day, Arthur heads off to the golf course with his brother-in-law. He tees up, takes an almighty swing, and squints down the fairway. He turns to the brother-in-law. "Did you see the ball?"

"Of course I did!", says the brother-in-law. "I have perfect eyesight."

"Where did it go?" asks Arthur.

"Can't remember."

"If your car could travel at the speed of light, would your headlights work?"
