Iuse Google Maps (e.g. Google Satellite) as a basemap but after a few round of zooming in and out, the map would disappear. I have tried using maps from both OpenLayers and QuickMapServices (as the former seems to give problems to more people). QuickMapServices' maps were slightly better but the problem persists. I've checked that the CRS for the map layer and other layers match so don't think it's something to do with that.

Once the problem strikes, there seems to be nothing I can do. If I delete and add the map again, it will still not show. I can't even add other maps such as Bing Satellite. However, if I start a new project, the maps could work as per normal for the new project. This means that I have to abandon the whole project and start on a new one, and transfer whatever I've done to the new one. However, it happens so frequently that transferring is not viable.


Just in case someone needs solution to this, I have found an answer that works. The solution is to add the google map as a raster file using xml file, which someone (Thanks to Thomas Horner!) has posted the code in another similar post. Why are the Google basemaps no longer appearing in QGIS?


Ive installed QGIS 3.10.14 on a new windows machine and then the Quickmapservices plugin. However, when I go to the menu, it doesn't show google or bing options. Were they discontinued along the way? Is this a known issue? Is there a solution?


Because basemaps provide a point of reference, you can find everything from aerial photographs, and satellite images to OSM. From planning to development to tourism to education, you can use these basemaps in a lot of applications.


The overall objective of this tutorial is to develop the spatial analysis and cartographic skills within the open-source software QGIS 3.22. By using the QuickMapServices plugin, users should be able to see the applicability of the add-on and be able to use it going forward in their own mapping careers. This tutorial will follow a step-by-step process that will determine ideal habitat locations for a hypothetical animal within Algonquin Park Ontario. With all of the data being open-sourced and QGIS being free, the entirety of this tutorial can be completed by anyone with a well-functioning computer or laptop.


QuickMapServices plugin comes into play when developing final products. Their maps are often used as basemaps and they add additional spatial context to any project. In this case, we will be using the Google Satellite Imagery to display our data effectively. Please follow the guide below when installing the plugin and adding basemaps:


By using completely open-sourced programs and data, this tutorial can be completed without any licensing issues. Open-source programs are often overlooked as they generally are claimed to be worse than their counterparts however this is not the case. Throughout this tutorial, you will be able to complete and visualize open source information effectively with the help of free plugins.


After you have downloaded all of the required files, it is strongly recommended to create a new folder within your C: drive that will act as a main directory for the project. This is very important as we will be dealing with a large number of shapefiles that will be changed in many different ways. This folder will also become the working directory and saving location for the project as a whole, therefore it will keep everything compact and easily accessible.


This menu can be accessed by the following path within the top menu of QGIS: Project -> Properties -> CRS. Specific projections can be searched by entering a projection known to work for a specific region in the "Filter" line. Should there be any question regarding the regional accuracy of the projection, a map view of the area covered is displayed for additional reference. Please see screenshot below for reference when setting up your CRS.


As mentioned above, now is the time you can import your shapefiles. You can import your shapefiles by using the browser menu within QGIS and located the folder within your C: drive (or wherever else you saved them). Select each shapefile, and drag it into the layers tab located underneath the browser tab. Your browser tab can be seen in the photo below and your imported shapefiles should be visible within the layers shapefile as seen in the image beneath.


For the purpose of this lab, we will be coming up with some habitat restrictions that will open the door for a variety of spatial analysis. Based on the open data collected, I have listed three hypothetical habitat restrictions below:


The results of your buffering and fix geometry process should resemble the following. All areas within 1km of a road will be marked in red therefore our hypothetical animal would not live within them.


By completing a process like this, it will allow us to determine areas located above 500m in elevation that are situated within 300m of a water source. Please follow the steps below when completing the process:


This is the last step in developing our hypothetical ideal habitat model. This step will allow the user to incorporate the last restriction on our results which will produce the final map. Please follow the instructions carefully as listed below:


Field maps are used to advise data entry in identifying the locations during the field survey. If data entries have gotten the administrative boundary with the government in the village office, a field map can be used to delineation the administrative boundary. Then we can bring the map to our office and input the boundary using JOSM. How to create the filed map? We can use QGIS version 2.14.22 in this chapter, QGIS is a professional GIS application that is built on top and proud to be itself Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). Before we start to create the field maps, we have to prepare the shapefile of the administrative boundary. If you have other spatial data such as roads, it will be useful to use the data in the field map. The steps to preparing the data:


If you can follow the whole instructions in this chapter, you have learned and practiced how to create the field map using the QGIS. You can create the field maps based on village administrative level to easy on the printout and bring to the field. The field maps will be used by data entry to identify the location, digitize the boundary, and mark the objects.


Background layers, or basemaps, are the background images you see when viewing a map. For example, the basemap may focus on city streets, show outdoor features such as rivers and mountains, or may contain satellite imagery. Using a background layer provides more context for a project.


Map tiles have greatly altered the idea of web mapping and give fast access to large datasets. Map tiles divide the world into small tiles, typically 256 x 256 pixels, for each zoom level and pre-render datasets to these tiles. In this way, only a small fraction of the background map is served to a user at any given time. This results in a map that can be easily zoomed or panned.


To access the QuickMapServices plugin, click on the plugin's icon on the ribbon:A number of basemap options are available, such as Landsat and NASA. Note that some layers require an API key. OWF has not yet determined how to incorporate API keys into the use of basemaps.


A base map in QGIS is a map layer that provides context for other map layers in a project. A base map typically includes features such as roads, rivers, and land-use patterns, and it provides a visual reference that allows users to orient themselves and understand the geographic context of the data they are working with.


Base maps are often used in combination with other map layers, such as thematic data layers or point data layers, to provide additional information and insight into a particular location or area. For example, a base map might show the streets and buildings in a city, while a thematic data layer might show the locations of restaurants or parks.


QGIS allows users to add a wide variety of base maps to their projects, including maps from popular online providers such as Google Maps, OpenStreetMap, and Bing Maps. Users can also create their own custom base maps by importing data from various sources, such as shapefiles, CSV files, or WMS services.


QuickMapServices: This plugin provides access to a wide range of basemaps from different providers, including OpenStreetMap, Google Maps, Bing Maps, and many others. It is easy to use and provides a simple interface for adding basemaps to your project.


Note that the QuickMapServices plugin requires an internet connection to access the basemaps. Also, make sure to check the terms of use for each basemap provider before using the basemaps in your project.

Soy usuario de QGis y acabo de instalar el complemento Quickmapservices, y a la hora de elaborar los mapas en la vista del diseador de impresin las etiquetas y simbologa de los servidores se ven proporcionales a la escala, mi problema est en que cuando exporto el mapa a pdf o imagen se reduce su tamao considerablemente haciendo que la toponimia sea casi ilegible.

Como podra solucionar esto? Es una lstima que suceda ya que el complemento es sensacional!

Muchas gracias por tu comentario ?

Parece ser que para el diseador hay un desfase entre la referencia del mapa base, que toma la totalidad de la hoja y el rea de dibujo/mapa, lo que puede provocar el cambio de tamao de las etiquetas. Es decir, todo lo que hayas hecho en el canvas tendr la referencia del rea de dibujo. Para evitar el error el mapa debe llenar todo el tamao de la pgina, sin ningn tipo de margen. Saludos


Hola Luis Carlos, Con este plugin no es posible descargar los datos. Para descargar las imgenes de Google, Bing, etc como imagen georreferenciada y hacer recortes puedes utilizar el programa ruso SAS.Planet, te dejo un artculo de inters: -descargar-imagenes-de-google-bing-etc/ Saludos!
