Hi!

I am trying to install Oracle 8i Personal Edition on Windows XP but I
get the following error during installation and the installer then
shuts down abruptly:

Unable to delete the NT Service for the SQL *Net V2 Listener

I am a real noob at Oracle, so please help me out.

Thanks,
Abhishek Dey Das.

8i is not certified on XP.
Download Oracle XE, free oracle 10g database version. You can develop
and deploy on it for free with no licensing.

Mmmm...Oracle 10g XE ...Yes..BUT...:

There are LIMITS to Oracle 10g XE. It will only support 4GB of user
data, one CPU and 1 GB memory. There are versions for 32bit Windows
and Linux only.

You can develop your application against the Oracle10gXE database and
then deploy the app and the database to your clients for free (well the
database will be free).

So what happens when your data out grows Oracle 10gXE? You UPGRADE by
installing Oracle 10g Standard Edition or Enterprise Edition over the
XE database. No migration, export/import etc.

The license says Oracle10gXE is free to download, develop, deploy and
distribute (even ISVs).

I am sorry I don't get your point?
You can't develop and deploy ANYTHING on Oracle 8i Personal Edition.
It is a PERSONAL version for just yourself and no others.

XE is a step better.
