if an application was devloped as a web site page do we need application sever or no

i used to devlop erp applications using vb.because there is a new trend for installing application server and the application works as if it is a regular web site.the question is if we write the application as asp or any other programming language that used to devlop web site pages then i think we will not need application server any more.is this right or no. .
