In case anyone has not yet seen this I remind that 64-bit Oracle Instant Client is not working on Lion - see http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=2187558&tstart=0&start=30 or http://rubyforge.org/forum/forum.php?thread_id=49548&forum_id=1078

As a result ruby-oci8 and oracle_enhanced adapter (when used with MRI) are not working on Mac OS X Lion.

Some have managed workaround with using 32-bit Oracle Instant Client and compiling 32-bit Ruby (see latest comments in mentioned discussion forums) but I would recommend to wait with Lion upgrade until 64-bit Oracle Instant Client is fixed to work on Lion. I have informed couple of Oracle people that I know about this issue and they will try to help but currently I do not have any information about if and when this issue will be fixed.

It's not fixed.  The "work around" that I am using for Ruby & Rails is to use RVM to set up a whole-stack Ruby environment that is compiled for 32 bit.  The 32 bit Instant Client libraries work  ok on Lion.

I'm not really sure what your options are for php, but hopefully you can do something similar.

Ray,
any progress on the 64 bit Oracle IC here that you are aware of?

I do not have any news, just what I see on Internet. There was a post at https://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=2318019 that someone got response from Oracle Development that "We are working on a 11gr2 client to support Lion and is expected to be available mid CY2012". So hopefully they will release new 11g client this year but then it probably will be broken on Mountain Lion :)

I was starting to think that this day would never arrive, but new OSX Instant Client is here:

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/topics/intel-macsoft-096467.html

We've obviously only started using it today, but so far so good on Mountain Lion!

Wow, I did not expect this happens. Congratulations.

Would you mind to tell me some more?
As far as I understand, Mountain Lion just runs on 64-bit CPU, then
64-bit kernel only.
Which Oracle client 11.2.0.3.0 (32-bit) or 11.2.0.3.0 (64-bit) do you install?

I installed the 64-bit client. I don't know where the 32-bit client would be useful, but Snow Leopard can run on 32-bit CPUs, so maybe there? (Oracle doesn't mention on their site which OS versions support which clients.)

Thanks for the reply.

There is no certification documents found, the BACIC_README says the
Darwin Kernel Version is 11.3.0, which maybe that of Lion. Lion
supports 32-bit CPU and OS kernel.

System name: Darwin

I "guess" certification matrix is like this.

Snow Leopard(10.6) - 10.2.0.4
Lion(10.7) - 11.2.0.3 (32-bit or 64 bit based on Lion kernel word size)
Mountain Lion(10.8) - 11.2.0.3(64bit as Mountain Lion supports only 64
bit kernel)

It's official certification info.

Also please send a email to Chris Jones for your Instant Client usage
on MacOS X, as described in this URL.

I just installed the 64 bits 11.2 instant client and upgraded OSX to OSX 10.8.2 and...... jihaa ...... it works. Mac is somewhat slower (still indexing) but I needed the OSX upgrade because Xcode wouldn't upgrade under 10.6.8 so I carried 2 machines around for the last year
