THE ORTHODOX MINYAN AT HARVARD HILLEL
Shabbat Re’eh
Shabbat: August 22th-23th, 2025 | 29 Av, 5785
NO DAVENING WILL BE AT HILLEL THIS SHABBAT. Additionally, we will be maintaining the 9:15am davening start time this week. See below for details. For all davenings everyone is encouraged to bring their own siddurim/chumashim as desired— many will be available but it will not be Hillel’s usual capacity. Shacharit will be AT THE SHERATON COMMANDER. Mincha and Maariv will be run jointly with Kehillat Lev Chochma at the home of Talia Weisberg and Evan Crane.
For August 23 and 30 we will be at the Sheraton Commander.
Shabbat Shalom! This parsha is definitely packed with lots of information and lessons, including the possibilities of blessings or curses, kosher animals and non-kosher birds, maaser sheni, and charity just to name a few themes. In honor of birds, please enjoy this bird themed, AI generated poem.
“Wings of Choice”
"See," says the voice, from mountain high, A path below, a path to sky. Blessing or curse, the choice is near, A call to live with heart and ear.
The Torah speaks of beasts and birds, Clean and unclean - sacred words. The eagle fierce, the vulture grim, Not fit for those who follow Him.
But not just food, these birds can teach, Of heights the soul was made to reach. They scan the land with a sharpened eye, reminding us to look, to try.
To rise above the earthly dust, To choose the good, to live with trust. For every law, each feathered name, Points toward a higher aim.
Like birds that chart the winds with grace, We, too, must find our rightful place. Not every path that shines is right - Discernment is the soul’s true flight.
So spread your wings, and do not fear, The blessing’s close, the curse is near. But you were made for skies above - To soar on faith, and fly with love.

Sign up to help with kiddush! Having a robust kiddush committee is key to having the wonderful kiddush each week we've become accustomed to. Please fill out this form to volunteer to help with kiddush in the future!
Camberville Eruv: The Camberville Eruv is in need of new checkers! The eruv is divided into 3 sections, with checkers specializing in one of the sections. Currently, one section is understaffed. It is covered by only two teams of checkers, which means these volunteers have to check every other week! Are you able to help out and volunteer to check the eruv? Typically, the commitment is to check once every 3-4 weeks, but there is some flexibility with this. Please let the eruv leadership team know if you are interested or have any questions by emailing Amy Robert at info...@nceruv.org
Please familiarize yourself with Harvard Hillel's exits in case of emergency. In addition to the main staircase, there are exits through the door behind the men's section and through the door to the left of the elevator. As Akiva has noted in past weeks, this section is of minimal relevance right now, but don't want people to forget it once we're back. After the 30th, we will hopefully be back in Hillel. Let us applaud Akiva for all the work he has done and all the words he has written in this section in his emails!!!! He will be missed! In other news, according to all known laws of aviation, there is no way a bee should be able to fly. Its wings are too small to get its fat little body off the ground. The bee, of course, flies anyway because bees don't care what humans think is impossible. Yellow, black. Yellow, black. Yellow, black. Yellow, black. Ooh, black and yellow! Let's shake it up a little.
The ZA'AKAH Peer-Support Hotline is available as a resource to our community for those who feel they need to talk to someone on Shabbat. It is not a substitute for professional crisis intervention. Call, text, or WhatsApp 1-888-4-ZAAKAH (1-888-492-2524).
