Shabbat Shalom! As we finish the book of Vayikra, we are reminded of the centrality of the land of Israel to Judaism, so this week, we’ll be discussing a relatively recent development in the Israeli canning industry: The 2021 passing of a produce reform bill, which brought Israel’s fruit and vegetable market standards in line with the European Union’s.
Intended to reduce the cost of living, the produce reform bill removed customs costs for a wide array of canned (and other) vegetable and fruit imports, as well as farming materials such as fertilizers and pesticides. This increased competition upset Israeli farmers and canning companies, who took to the streets in protest, concerned that without protective tariffs, Israeli companies would be unable to compete with imported goods.
Now nearly 4 years later, the stock value of an Israeli canning company (Yechin / Sanlakol), which decried the policy change as a death knell, has nearly doubled, and that of another canning company (Gan Shmuel) has increased by about 50%, so it would appear that the concerns raised were exaggerated. The reforms do seem to have somewhat accomplished their intended goals either, with Israeli produce prices increasing by only about 16% from 2021-2024, an amount nearly identical to inflation.
