Chris in 'Vegas >> 2012 Opti R15 ... Bike had a full factory overhaul in 2015. Still love it and actually bought an additional Opti SIMBB 27.5" w/ 3" tires 600w for more dedicated rough off-road use.

2010 850HD with the extended range carbon-core battery. Almost no maintenance, brake levers showing some corrosion. I have about 35,000 miles logged with only the front fork losing it's "drop-down" lock ability (I'm installing a fork kit soon), and replaced the halogen lights with LED's. It's a great bike, still.

Chris, Hamburg, Germany
2009
2016 battery replaced with a local dealer
2017 front breaks replaced with Magura
Some corrosions due to poor quality of screws.
Anything else is fine

I've got a 2010 850R with Heavy Duty package (Fox Talas 36 and RP23) used for Mtn Biking in NorCal. Replaced normal wear / tear items; brakes, wheels, rotors, chain, tires, and put on LED lights. Original fork and suspension still going strong with rebuild kits. Routine maintenance done frequently. Recently there has been a weird grind issue felt with noise in the cranks when torque is applied on either side... my bike shop in Auburn, CA has been trying to diagnose. I'm sure it will get taken care of.

Any ideas of what this bike is worth if I put it up for sale?

Hi Neel,
I had noise in the cranks twice, reason were always the screws, fixing the the crank on the shaft of the MBB. Used Loctite to fix it ( second time). Works fine
Cheers

Thanks Chris! Did it feel like slight grinding under torque at low speed? And did it go away if you pedal fast at about 18mph plus? Those are my current symptoms... I'll try the loctite.

Cheers,
Neel

I use mine for commuting to job locations, not off-road much, and I don't regularly use a lot of torque at low speeds because I try to maximize the battery for my trips. I haven't had any grinding noises you're mentioning. I have had to occasionally tighten screws at various places on the bike, but it's really like a car as far as regular maintenance goes.
I ride mine in Rhode Island

Hi,
sorry for delay…
It occurred whenever I was pedaling hard. It doesn´t matter what speed.

To answer your questions:
No, not like grinding
Yes, under torque
At any speed
No, it goes away when I reduced the torque from pedaling.
Motor is running fine at any speed.

Your symptoms sounds to me like a problem within the motor. IF the bike is used frequently, the gear inside the motor may be worn out. There was a discussion about opening the motor here in 2015 with some pics.

Cheers
Chris

Thanks Chris! My mechanic had some conversations with the Opti team. They're going to open her up tomorrow for the first time in 7 years and see if any surgery is necessary... Thanks for the pics.

Hi Neel,

some news about the motor? Would be great to learn a little bit about the surgery, if any.

Cheers

Hi Chris,

Sorry for the delay. I was on vacation. Just got the 850R back from my shop. They spent a lot of time debugging and working with Opti... The slippage in cranks was resolved when Opti sent out some small replacements parts...forgot the names.

It appears the creaking noise is still there (intermittently) with different loads:( I need to get her out on the trail for some quality time and talk about our feelings...LOL! She's been meticulously maintained, and it may just be a sign of aging from a lot of fun trail riding. I'll advise if there's an update.

Cheers,
Neel

I've got a 2011 R11. Use it mostly for commuting. 35 mile roundtrip in Silicon Valley. Love my Opti. Been very reliable. Did replace the battery tho. That seemed a little premature. Hope this new one lasts longer. Also have SORAA LED lamps. Fabulous upgrade. Would still like to see Opti manufacture a rack mount that uses the rear fender mounting points. That's the upgrade I want the most.
