better way to define xtype?

I found it's really inconvenient to define the variable type when there are a lot of variables.
The way shown in the examples define the "xtype" as follows:

% Integer Constraints
xtype = 'BCCI';


Isn't there any better way to define it?
Let's say, for example, make it a vector or matrix of {0,1,2} which matches the size of input variable, where 0:B, 1:C, 2:I.
