A femme Full Monty (1997), Calendar Girls (2003) mines humor and charm out of the true story of older British women doffing their clothes for charity, despite reverting to perilously trite melodrama in its clumsy second half. Mercifully restrained in portraying the critical illness that provokes these Yorkshire ladies to shake up their comically dull women's club, Calendar Girls lightly builds to the moment of truth, as Helen Mirren's ballsy Chris and Julie Walters' widow Annie corral their friends for the calendar photo shoot that hilariously redefines the meaning of "cheesecake." Once the curse of fame sets in, though, the girls' predictable interpersonal crises and fateful trip to Hollywood sap the energy out of the film, leaving only the performances to save it. Sly, funny, and passionate, Mirren not only turns Chris into a complex blend of ego and sass, but also proves once again that hotness doesn't end at age 40; Walters' low-key strength makes Annie's grief palpable without becoming maudlin. The stellar supporting cast, including Celia Imrie, Annette Crosbie, and Penelope Wilton, deftly shows the fun in throwing modesty (and bras) to the wind. Even with its dramatic weaknesses, Calendar Girls remains enough of a delight for giving so many superb actresses witty, multi-layered roles.
The first lesson of Derry Girls, the Netflix comedy set the mid- '90s during Northern Ireland's Troubles, is to watch it with subtitles. Those Irish accents are lilting and melodic, but to Arkansas ears, the characters might as well be speaking Latin. And not just regular Latin, but gutter Latin filled with slang.
Aye, Derry Girls, with its crackin' soundtrack, is about four teenage girls and one English boy and their misadventures in Derry, a city hit heavily by sectarian violence between English-backed Protestants and Irish Catholics.
Erin is an unabashed fan of Sinead O'Connor and Murder, She Wrote who lives with her parents, her aunt, her cousin Orla and her grumpy grandfather. She and Orla attend the all-girls Our Lady Immaculate school with over-anxious Clare, foul-mouthed Michelle and James, Michelle's English cousin who is forced to attend Our Lady because his Englishness would get him killed over at the boy's school.
The current season finds the girls, with James in tow, trying in vain to hook up with a group of Protestant boys on a wilderness retreat, attempting to attend a Take That concert, falling under the spell of a new teacher who has obviously just seen Dead Poet's Society, looking for prom dates, befriending a sadistic new student they think is Chinese and plotting to kidnap Sister Michael's prized statue of the Child of Prague -- "Jesus as a wain," Michelle calls it.
The six-episode season ends with President Bill Clinton's 1995 trip to Derry, which has all of the city swooning. Sister Michael's reaction, as she tells the girls that school will not be canceled for Clinton's visit, is priceless.
The new season, which I binged in an afternoon and will probably binge again before you even read this, came at the right time in my TV-viewing life. I'd just finished HBO's uneven but fascinating Euphoria, the graphic, stylized, 10-episode drama about American teenage girls as they deal with mental illness, sexual confusion, drug addiction and peer pressure.

Beyond technical issues, many people are also simply more used to using subtitles, which makes keeping them on a habit instead of a distraction. As to why they are used to them, one needs to only look at the meteoric rise of availability and consumption of foreign language content on streamers.
I didn't always believe I could be where I am today. As a kid growing up in Ghana I didn't think about things like legacy or timelessness. The world was what was in front of you, and I didn't see those possibilities in my surroundings. But when I looked outward, upward, I saw artists and leaders. I saw change-makers. They provoked me to think in new ways. I was inspired and challenged by their fearlessness, their work ethic and the sacrifices they made.The drive and spirit I saw within them, I began to perceive within myself.I started to look beyond my own world, past any obstacle or ceiling and straight into the sky itself.These individuals taught me not only to dream of a different kind of life, but to make it a reality. Over the years, one of the things that has struck me on my own journey is that so many of those people who inspired me as a child, keep inspiring me today. And at the same time, new figures, even younger than myself, have become giants, new inspirations. I realized that it isn't about being young or old, fresh or wise. What makes these icons who they are lies elsewhere. It is in their focus, their dedication, their passion. They never stop. They never quit. They seem indelible, able to continue to create, achieve and imagine in ways that almost defy time itself. They are timeless. This is my theme. This is the story I want to tell. This project is a calendar, but it is not one with a great respect for time. It is anti-time. It is a celebration of these iconic individuals who with every step chart their own timeless path. In these images, my aim is to explore and reimagine how I perceived these seminal figures as a kid growing up in West Africa. I want to tell a story that explores the power of how our achievements are experienced in the eyes of those we inspire. In the end this project is not about my journey or yours; it's about theirs, my community, the youth. This is about providing a chance for other kids like me, to see these images and to be inspired to become their own best selves.
Calendar Girls is at its height when all the fuss is over and the women finally come together to create a beautiful calendar. The calendar is beautiful and artistic. The actresses are stunning and humorous as they overcome their bashfulness to bare it all collectively. It is unfortunate that the height of the film lands right smack in the middle, leaving the rest unbearably dull.
After the world is whipped into media frenzy over the calendars, Calendar Girls too quickly becomes more of a judgment about how 15 minutes of fame can go to your head than a lovely tale featuring middle-aged nudity. Helen Mirren and Julie Walters carry the film fantastically but their performances are easy to overlook when the film begins to spiral into sluggishness.

(There are 2 other summaries) National Mathematics and Science Partnerships Act - Requires the Director of the National Science Foundation (NSF) to establish various programs relating to elementary and secondary school mathematics and science teaching and education.(Sec. 4) Requires the NSF Director to remedy any duplication of programs authorized under this Act by current or subsequent NSF education programs. Requires the Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy to review, and report to specified congressional committees on, NSF education programs to ensure compliance.(Sec. 5) Authorizes the Director to establish matching fund requirements for any of the programs under this Act, except the Robert Noyce Scholarship program under title IV.(Sec. 6) Requires the NSF Director, in carrying out activities authorized by this Act, to coordinate with the Secretary of Education to ensure close cooperation with programs authorized under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965.Title I: Mathematics and Science Education Partnerships - Subtitle A: Mathematics and Science Education Partnerships - Requires the Director to award competitive grants to institutions of higher education or eligible nonprofit institutions for Mathematics and Science Education Partnerships with local educational agencies, which may also include State educational agencies and businesses. Sets forth authorized program activities. Requires certain enrichment program activities for girls. Allows grantees to provide room and board for participating teachers.Title IV: Robert Noyce Scholarship Program - Requires the Director to award competitive grants to institutions of higher education to provide scholarships, stipends, and programming designed to recruit and train mathematics and science teachers. Designates such grants program as the Robert Noyce Scholarship Program, and such grantee institutions as National Teacher Scholarship Centers. Provides for scholarships for certain students and stipends for certain professionals seeking teaching certification. Requires certain teaching service commitments from individuals who receive such scholarships or stipends. Directs grantee institutions to supply to the Director statistical and demographic data on scholarship recipients and stipend recipients, including information on required teaching employment. Requires the Director to report to Congress on the impact of the implementation of this title on drawing into teaching top mathematics and science students, including students from groups underrepresented in mathematics, science and engineering.Title V: Requirements for Research Centers - Requires the Director to ensure that any NSF program that awards grants for the establishment of research centers at institutions of higher education after the date of the enactment of this Act: (1) requires every center to offer programs for elementary and secondary mathematics and science teachers and students to increase their understanding of the field in which the center specializes; and (2) uses the quality of a center's proposed precollege education programs as a criterion in determining grant awards.Title VI: Educational Technologies Research - Subtitle A: Research Centers - Requires the Director to award competitive grants to institutions of higher education to establish centers to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of information technologies in elementary and secondary mathematics and science education.Subtitle B: Assistance - Amends the Scientific and Advanced Technology Act of 1992 to authorize the Director to award competitive grants to associate-degree granting colleges, bachelor-degree granting institutions, or education service agencies to establish centers to assist elementary and secondary schools in the use of information technology for mathematics, science, or technology instruction.Title VII: Miscellaneous Provisions - Requires the Director to award demonstration grants to eligible local educational agencies (LEAs) for mathematics and science proficiency partnerships.(Sec. 701) Allows grant funds to be used to: (1) provide teacher professional development in mathematics, science, or technology; (2) develop or implement mathematics, science, and information technology curricula, and purchase related equipment; and (3) carry out other activities the NSF Director determines would improve mathematics, science, or technology education. Requires LEA conditional agreements for private sector participation in such programs through: (1) donation of equipment; (2) establishment of mentoring and internship opportunities; and (3) donation of college scholarship funds for students who have participated. Requires special priority in awarding such grants to be given to eligible LEAs that demonstrate the greatest: (1) ability to obtain commitments from private sector representatives to provide such services and funds; and (2) economic need. Requires assessment, evaluation, and a report to Congress on such demonstration grants project.(Sec. 702) Requires the Director, in making awards for outreach grants (for articulation partnerships between community colleges and secondary schools) under the Scientific and Advanced-Technology Act of 1992, to give priority to proposals that involve secondary schools with a majority of students from groups that are underrepresented in the science, mathematics, and engineering workforce. Exempts awards in such cases from a matching contribution requirement.(Sec. 703) Requires the Director to review, and report to Congress on, all NSF-sponsored programs that support in-service teacher professional development for science teachers to determine: (1) the level of resources and degree of emphasis placed on training teachers in the effective use of information technology in the classroom; and (2) the allocation of resources between summer activities and follow-on reinforcement training and support to participating teachers during the school year.(Sec. 704) Requires the Director to study and report to Congress on broadband Internet access for schools and libraries.
