Extra Credit Idea

Dear Mathesers,

 

I think I might try this idea in my AP Calculus and Algebra I classes.  Might be possible to use it with any class that has a big year end test.  This is from the AP Calc EDG (Electronic Discussion Group):

 

[I was fortunate enough to be able to work with some teachers in Kentucky this week. One of them give me a great idea for extra credit in an AB or BC calculus course. His name is Brian Sullivan and here is what he does:

 

Early in the year he printed up the 2003 AB calculus exam MC and FR and gave it to his kids. They keep it all year and whenever they find a question that they know how to do they write it up showing their work or reasoning and hand it in for extra credit. Of course as the year goes on they learn how to do more questions. By looking through the exam all year long they also become familiar with the type and style of questions they'll see in May.

 

It's not too late to start this now.

Of course you have some issues with how do students show their answers, how much extra credit, etc. , but I still like the fact that you have shared more of the learning responsibility with the students.

Sounds like a good idea to me! Perhaps you could have an “Extra Credit Presentation Day” every so often. Depending on class size, students could sign up in advance for a 10 min time slot (??) to orally present their extra credit problems from the exam(s) to the class. This way, others can see problems from the exam and how they are worked. Probably need to somehow make sure students sign up for different problems each time. J

 

Maybe use an oral presentation rubric (I’ll try to attach one we use in our undergrad program as an example) to grade their presentation, mathematical thinking, etc. I’ve also attached a Written Response scoring rubric that you can edit… if this is helpful at all, I don’t know…

I think this sounds like a great idea. Question: do you leave them
in the multiple choice format or make it free response? They will
learn process of elimination if you leave in mc but may not learn
process to work out problem unless it is in the free resp. What do
you think?
