Hi,

I would like to find out if oppiamobile supports voice over functionality, we are working on Health Promoters training material and we would like to use pictures with voice over.

From the material that I have downloaded I can see that video is supported in a great way, is it possible to  have a voice over whilst the picture is showing.

Thanks and Regards

Hi Ronald,

At the moment all we have is the 'read aloud' functionality - so when you're on one of the course activity pages in the mobile, press the menu button and there is a 'read aloud' option. The just uses the phone's text-to-speech (TTS)  engine to read out whatever text is on the page.

I realise this probably isn't exactly what you're looking for, as it will only read text already printed on the page - and is also dependent on the TTS and whether one is installed or not.

I guess one issue here is whether you'd like to rely just on the TTS engine, or have the voice over pre-recorded and distributed with the courses?

Cheers,
Alex

Thanks for your response, I am planning to test the read aloud functionality, especially to see if it can read and properly pronounce Shona words (training materials will be available in both Shona and English)

The voice is supposed to be pre recorded with different effects and tones depending on the subject been discussed.

Hi Ronald,

I suspect you'll find that the TTS won't work well... when I test on my phone (using the default TTS engine), even just reading English text sounds quite robotic - so I doubt pronunciation for other languages would be very good. There are other TTS engines you can install, I've tested SVOX - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.svox.classic - and it sounds so much better than the default engine - however this is a paid app and you need to install a specific plugin for each voice (eg. UK English, US English, German etc).

Being able to embed audio resources (similar to how we've done the video resources) is on our to-do list, just that we've not got to that yet - should be straightforward enough if we follow similar approach to that which we did for the videos.

Although of course it does mean an overhead in the course production process as you'd need to record all the audio ready for distribution.

Cheers,
Alex
