Hi Oppia contributors! 👋


Welcome to the latest edition of our quarterly newsletter!


This quarter, we’re excited to share some incredible accomplishments from our teams that are shaping the future of Oppia. A standout achievement is the implementation of multiple classroom support, a game-changing feature that many learners have requested and that significantly expands the platform’s educational capabilities to support curated lessons in other subjects like Science and Financial Literacy.


Our teams have also been hard at work enhancing our technical infrastructure, streamlining workflows, and securing new partnerships across the globe.


To celebrate and align on these milestones, we held our All Hands Meeting on October 11, where teams provided an inside overview of recent progress and future goals. Highlights included deeper insights into multiple classroom support, product updates, a contributor spotlight in our Fireside Chat, and a new focus on the Marketing Fundraising Campaign. Team Highlights

⚙️ Technical Development


  • Enhanced Platform Capabilities: Through Oppia’s successful participation in Google Summer of Code (GSoC), the team implemented multiple classroom support and enhanced code coverage, significantly expanding the platform’s scalability and improving testing processes.

  • Technical Analytics Expansion: Successfully completed the Technical Analytics project, broadening the range of metrics collected from the app. This enhancement provides deeper insights into user behavior, enabling data-driven decisions to improve the user experience.

  • System Updates: Upgraded Bazel and Kotlin versions to boost security, enhance functionality, and improve developer efficiency, resulting in a more robust and stable app infrastructure.


🎯 LaCE Quality


  • Classroom Infrastructure Development: Began developing the infrastructure to support Multiple Classrooms, expanding learning options beyond math.

  • User-Centric Static Page Redesign: Completed the redesign of key static pages based on user feedback, enhancing user experience and navigation for learners and content creators.


💻 Design Systems


  • Comprehensive Design System Audit: Completed a full audit of typography, updating the system with new guidance and a ‘typography use case table,’ improving workflow efficiency for the web team.

  • Streamlined Collaboration with UXW: Established an integrated process for collaborating with UX writing, ensuring cohesive and user-friendly designs across all projects.


🌍 Translations


  • TranslateWiki on Web: TranslateWiki strings were updated to 100% for the following languages, ensuring that Oppia's web interface can now be fully viewed by users in these languages:

    • Arabic

    • Brazillian Portuguese

    • Spanish


📚 Practice Questions & Lesson Review


  • New Topics Advancements: Major progress was achieved in creating practice questions for the Decimals and Geometry topics, which will soon be available, enriching the platform’s learning opportunities.


💰 Grants & Fundraising  


  • Strategic Team Overhaul: Reorganized the team’s structure, improving efficiency in grant research and relationship management, and positioning the team to secure new funding opportunities.


         🤝   Partnerships:

  • Brazil: Signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Cultura Urbana, expanding Oppia’s reach in Brazil. Reactivated a dormant partnership with Bandeirantes Ja and initiated discussions with a new international partner.

  • Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA): Signed two MoUs with the Thinking Cap Literacy Initiative and the BA Foundation, extending Oppia’s presence into Nigeria and strengthening ties in the region. Expanded engagements to Cameroon by initiating discussions with 2 organizations. Onboarded four new volunteers to support these initiatives.
