Dear Paul, once again your post resonated for me. As I was preparing my blog post today I seemed to use either genealogist or family historian to describe what I do. Thinking a bit deeper I would also answer to Essential Genealogist and Ancestry Whisperer. Mostly what I do (after I have researched, harvested evidence and written ancestral stories) is pass on my tips for others to become successful Family History Detectives.!

i agree its about the wider aspects of out ancestors lives, its as much social history as family history. i love the framework of a house analogy, we can hang the pieces of information on the framework or walls of the house

I have not followed a certified or academic route to a career in genealogy, and am therefore happy to identify as a family historian. Different paths for different people, and for my chosen path ensures that family history remains my escape or guilty pleasure, and my hobby.

Thanks, Andrew for your valued opinion and like you have done, I have changed my viewpoint a few times over the years. Initially, I half-jokingly always referred to myself as an enthusiastic amateur, mainly to identify that I am not a paid professional, but I have come to realise that many amateurs have just as many skills as their professional counterparts, the only difference is that in many cases they might not make a living carrying out research. I always like to think of myself as more of a family historian, a tree without context is purely a set of dates and numbers.

Am I a family historian or a genealogist, that depends on the day of the week the time of day who I am talking to whether the sun is out etc., etc.? I jump between the two options at a tip of the hat. I may be doing family history one moment then have to slip into genealogy the next to trace so distant cousin who has just lifted his/her head above the parapet.
However I am now also a geneticist since DNA has become accessible and databases available not only using DNA to discover matches but mapping segments of DNA to distant great grandparents to discover who different segments come from. If I had to choose one defining name, I would stick with Family Historian as apart from all the paper work and internet time I am also the curator of all the old family junk, sorry I mean treasures and artifacts.
Cheers
Guy

i am the family mystery solver and history excavator and usually i am the one assigned the task of getting past a historical brick wall in the family and i have felt like i am moving that wall brick by brick to find what is missing and i am still running into brick walls on some lines others are as far as you can go and are solved.

Family Historian 7 is a user-friendly software designed to assist you in creating your family tree, starting with a chosen root individual. It includes built-in online search tools that can identify matches on websites such as FindMyPast and MyHeritage. These tools enable you to uncover additional information about your relatives, including those you may not have been aware of. Keep in mind that accessing historical records from these platforms may require a paid subscription.

You can put Family Historian 7 through its paces without spending a penny. They offer a free 30-day trial of the family tree software, after which, you will need to purchase a license. During the trial, you can access all Family Historian 7 has to offer, including:

The software is intuitive, making it quick and easy for me to add family members, which has to be done manually. You can add pictures, birth dates, death dates, towns, job information, and facts to each family member.

Unfortunately, for me, the charts are not particularly visually appealing, with a rather retro and bland appearance. However, you can share your findings online with family, or by using the simple scrapbooking tools to create informative booklets and CDs with your genealogy findings.

When it comes to viewing or printing out your family tree, there is a large range of charts and reports to choose from. Of course, there is the standard ancestor and descendent diagrams, plus a fan chart, charts featuring everyone including all relationships, and charts for individual relatives. In all there are 22 diagram types, plus you can create your own custom family tree diagrams.

Starting with myself as the root person, thanks to the intuitive and user-friendly software, within an hour I had the basis of a family tree. The system for inputting family members is very simple, with the ability to add pictures and numerous facts to each individual.

I had quickly exhausted my personal knowledge of my family tree, however, Family Historian provides on-screen hints in the main workspace window when potential matches are found on MyHeritage and FindMyPast. Clicking on these hints gives an idea of the information you may discover on the genealogy sites, but you need to pay for a subscription to view the records.

I did like that you could choose which relatives you could show on the tree, from showing every member, or just the descendants and ancestors of individual family members. Also, the map feature would probably prove really interesting to those who have family spread around the world.

There are no subscription costs for the software, but if you want to access additional information from MyHeritage or FindMyPast to build up your family tree, you will have to pay a monthly fee. Without the billions of historical records from these genealogy sites, it is difficult to grow your family tree very far beyond your own knowledge.

Of course, as long as you have a GEDCOM file saved from that family tree software. GEDCOM is the world-wide standard for sharing genealogical information and Family Historian is 100% GEDCOM compatible, meaning you can import your family tree into the software, with accurate results. This is great if you want to create some narrative reports or additional charts from an existing family tree file.

If you know a lot about your family history and have relatives that can help you build your family tree, you may not need a subscription to a genealogy website. If you have information to go on, you can find useful resources online that can be accessed for free, such as some Census records.

The program can be used to generate charts and diagrams, reports, maps, books & booklets, websites, and family tree CDs & DVDs. Reports and books can be saved in rich-text format, suitable for editing in a word-processor. Diagrams, charts, reports and books can all be saved in PDF format. Pictures can be linked to all the people in them (each person is linked directly to their face in the picture). The program also features a map window (with a choice of map types), web hints (automatic matching of data in databases on the Internet), an automatic source citation pane (to make adding sources easy), web clipping tools (for extracting data from web pages), internet search tools, interactive 'smart trees', multi-level undo/redo, and more. Users can extend the program themselves by creating plugins using scripting tools which are included with each copy. Plugins can be shared with other users by uploading them to the Family Historian Plugin Store. All plugins are free for Family Historian users.

The Center for Family History and Genealogy was established at Brigham Young University in order to utilize BYU resources to simplify the process of finding of ancestors and the discovery of the world in which they lived. The Center also supported student training for life-long temple and family history service. Partners of the Center include: BYU Religious Education, BYU Department of History, BYU School of Family Life, BYU Computer Science, State Archives of Niedersachsen, Germany, and the State Archives of Bavaria, Germany.

I spend part of my time working as a family historian for the website ancestry.co.uk, helping people build their family trees. I also act as a copywriter and copy editor for the website, producing all kinds of different material.

I always had an interest in history, but originally chose to move into the media. My first jobs were in publishing, writing for computing and gaming magazines. I moved to a family tree magazine, where I spent three years. I decided that my next step was in family history rather than publishing, so moved into this job.

* Write down birth dates and death dates inside a family bible
* Look for high school yearbooks that may contain photos of their relatives and ancestors
* Record (in text or audio) the family stories that have been handed down from one generation to the next
* Use the family history section of their local genealogy library
* Seek out old letters, diaries, and journals of ancestors
* Organize family reunions
* Transfer VHS tapes of family vacations into digital videos
* Label old family photos

For many people, there is some overlap between the tasks that are typically done by a genealogist and the tasks done by a family historian. A person might start by using vital records to fill in their family tree, and then later, start looking for personal stories about those ancestors.

Deluxe genealogy software written by a leading UK software designer for the UK market. A new concept in genealogy programs that allows you to enter your family by drawing a tree. Full support is given for sources, notes, facts and linked multimedia elements. For researchers it provides support for Queries and Reports.

This award-winning genealogy package has a huge number of features. It allows you to enter your family by drawing a tree, as well as by entering the data one person at a time. Full support is given for sources, notes, facts and linked multimedia elements. For professional researchers it provides support for Queries and Reports, allowing you quickly find what you need.

My point here is to assert the fact that there is no need to continue to be the family collector and recorder of mistreatment and injustices. Yes. I am stating that, for Some People (not all) there is a volitional process in this and the process can be interrupted and changed.
