I know there has been previous discussion about the pros and cons of chiropractors in the treatment of OPLL symptoms.   Is anyone in this discussion group exploring other alternative methods of treatment such as acupuncture, Chinese medicine - other holistic therapies etc?   I am becoming increasingly convinced that I need to pay attention to the "whole me" and keep the body machine as well tuned as possible - bearing in mind I do very much enjoy a nice glass of wine at the end of the day!!    Not going over the top in any way but am interested in others thoughts on this, anything that worked etc.
By the way, any access to alternative therapies here in the Solomons is limited to web access and books.  I am sure there are "kastom doktors" out there but have not found one yet.

Keep smiling

    Hi Pam,

I was about 53-54 when I began menopause, and I'm now 61. No hysterectomy yet, and no hormone replacement therapy either. Luckily, my family genes don't include any female related cancer. more...

Hi everyone - I've been keeping a low profile lately....way too busy
with work.

Given the pain I still have in my neck and the limited motion of my
neck, I would not let a chiro touch me. I'm sure they will want to do
some kind of adjustment and I don't think I could or would handle it
very well. That said, I do think it is a good idea to keep your body
in tune and in shape - I think I would have less issues right now if I
were in better shape. My 2c.

Cheers......

Hi to everyone,
Last night, I had a call from some 'spine institute' that wanted to
give me a free evaluation. Then the caller let me know the 'Dr' was a
chiropractor. I mentioned that I have had 4 surgeries on my spine with
titanium hardware installed, then they didn't want anything to do with
me. There are some good chiropractors who practice conservatively
with exercises and PT modalities, but some advertise manipulation to
cure everything from children's ear infections to adult sleep
disorders. They do basic x-ray films, which may not show cord
compression from OPLL or stenosis where the spinal nerves are in
jeopardy of injury from manipulation. If chiropractors know their
limits, I have no problem with them. As for other forms of alternative
medicine, I have no problem with them, as long as they don't put the
patient in a dangerous position- hyper extended c-spine, etc. My
mother had ovarian cancer and died in 1999. She found alternative
treatments soothing, and helpful to make her feel better. She had
healing touch, and acupuncture done. It didn't affect the tumor
growth, but she felt better. Sometimes believing in another form of
treatment, as long as it isn't dangerous is beneficial to the
patient's overall being. I find meditation and prayer to be beneficial
for me. I also stretch as much as I can- knowing my limits, and keep
moving-resting as needed. Remember, if it doesn't feel right, or puts
you in an awkward position, it may not be right for you. We have to
take care, because the rest of the world see us like anyone else. We
know what we have been through and what is hidden in our spine. All my
best to everyone.

Hi everyone,

I give kudos to Brian and I totally agree with him on the chiro subject.  My chiro still thinks he can help me and has done a lot more harm then good. I just heard the other week as he told my mother-in-law that I help people all the time with this condition.  I will be talking to him and reminding him that A) Do you know what OPLL is?  B) Confidentiality...I want no more discussion to anyone about my condition  C)  You better be praying to God that you find the answer about OPLL and stop manipulating people who have it!  So with that said that is my 2 cents worth!

I do again that we should be a well tuned machine, but with all this pain, how do you do that?  I am still trying to figure that one out and when I have an answer I will let you know.  I believe in all things that are spiritual, but when it comes to my health I listen closely to my body...I haven't been wrong yet.  Trying to solve this puzzle when the pieces are missing I find meditation and patience the best solution.  I wish all my fellow OPPLers the very best in life.  I know you want answers too.  I am still waiting for my results of the CT and I feel it is taking so long because they do not know how to diagnose it.  I am praying that finally I have the right hospital system that can help me.  I will keep a positive attitude and be patient...what else do I have but time.

Take Care, God Bless and Have a Great Day!

Hugs to all,
D :-)

I have tried acupuncture and an anti-inflammatory diet. The acupuncture did seem to help some initially but the effects didn't last very long. I also had the summer off from work when I tried it so I do seem to take better care of myself so that might have been it. I am currently am still on a Gluten free diet. I don't think it is helping my spine but It does seem to make my digestive system more regular. Since I take several meds. that can effect digestion that pretty important to me. Many people have suggested Chiro in the past but I was very concerned since I have a Congenital Fusion. Knowing what I know now I wouldn't even consider it. Once a massage therapist I used to see went to a class and then gave me a deep tissue massage. I ended up in so much pain that I haven't been back.
Thank you everyone for being so supportive. It is great to have empathy from fellow OPLL's. Lets keep each other informed of what we try. I will email next week about my Cervical investigational Block.
