I have a 2017 Macbook Pro 13-inch, serial # FV***V22. I recently upgraded to Ventura 13.0.1 and now my scanner won't work. Previously I would got to System Settings, click Printers & Scanners, and click the Open Scanner button. Since the software upgrade, when I click the Open Scanner button, a new page opens with the name of my printer at the top (Brother MFC-J870DW) but nothing happens after that. I was able to use the scanner with an app (Brother iPrint&Scan) but regret the loss of innate scanner ability
Apple's Image Capture app worked. I didn't realize that it was the same thing that popped up when I clicked on 'Printers and Scanners' and clicked 'Open Scanner'. Why it no longer works like before doesn't matter now that I've found Image Capture.
If the answer is yes then I recommend that you contactBrother's support site for assistance. As noted above there are alternatives available to make your scanner function. VueScan will work with any fairly recent scanner.
With that said, you may be able to use the Image Capture app instead of the Open Scanner in Settings. That is the first thing I would try. If the standard ICA driver that is provided with the OS is unable to detect your scanner in Image Capture, then you will need an ICA driver from brother. Since they choose not to support Ventura, you may be able to find it in a different model from Brother. They say it is included with the Printer Drivers that you can download, but don't know if they give you the option to just install the ICA driver without the printer drivers.
I am sorry you are having scanner problems. If you will bear with me, I will offer some things to consider which may be useful. Whenever we install an operating system upgrade or some OS updates, printers and scanners will often stop working. Then a new OS compliant software must be installed for the scanner to work. Experience has shown that many printer/scanner manufacturers are very slow to provide updated software. What you can do is to thoroughly check theBrother web site for updated compliant software that works. If none is available, then you should ask when it will be released. If that doesn't work, you can try scanning using Apple's Image Capture app. It will scan, but is not full featured. Another alternative is to download and try the full featured scanner software from VueScan. You can try it for free. It will show a watermark until you purchase it. I bought it and can recommend it. I have no association with VueScan. Good luck.
I see that if I uninstall my Brother l2740dw and reinstall it, the scanner works for a few minutes, then stops and reverts back to a grayed out scanner on the screen. So I have to keep reinstalling the printer every time I want to scan. But not if I only want to print. Any help greatly appreciated.
Aha. Shared devices looks grayed out. But... if you hover over it and click, devices magically appear. I got a scan. I had to discover that you can set dpi if you click "Show Details". It should also say "Set". Thanks. (I did already get the current job done with my HP Printer when I discovered it was a Brother only bug.). Hopefully, Brother comes out with a new driver soon. I can now wait.
The work around I found is to create a new printer, that is "Control panels-> Printers and Scanners-> Add printer, Scanner or Fax". For me (a brother MPC8680DN) it comes up in the list. Select it and give it a new name, perhaps with a number at the end. Like Upstairs Brother 2023-1. It works for 3-7 scans, then you have to create another printer with a new name. Don't worry the control panel will let you delete the old ones.
Hi, I'm having the same issue after I upgaded my Mac OS to Ventura. I tried downloading VueScan but that isn't working either. I also tried the additional tips provided below on this thread but no luck. Any additional thoughts on what might help me get my scanner to work? Any help is greatly appreciated.
I'm glad you found a solution. VueScan usually works well, but if it doesn't work with your unit I would check their web site to confirm whether is is supported. Sometimes they have to release updates that will work both with a new OS and a particular scanner.
I just checked Printers & Scanners and discovered I had two entries for the printer. One had Driver Version 3.0; the other 4.0.14. I deleted the printer with the older version and now scanning works with Brother app.
