I have just downloaded v10.51 and it is a mess. I have no menu bar; I
looked at appearances to reset things but all the button and checkbox text
was missing. It seems a mess.

Perhaps you're using an old skin that needs to be updated for the new
version, or do you mean that things have changed significantly between
10.50 and 10.51?

Click on the red Opera icon to the left of the tab bar (it was formerally
an icon of a menu in versions 9.5-10.1) and enable the bar again.

i use a old skin: Breeze Simplified MICRO V4.2 and the tab buttons:
minimize, maximize and close are gone in 10.51. (they used to be next to
"Closed Tabs" button)
it's the same with OperaStandard skin. it looks to me as if the tabs can
show the close tab icon only on them-self.
