I was happily using Opera 11.64 for web browsing, mail, news, and feeds, but decided to give 12.0 a try. Due to multiple issues I have with web browsing, I rolled back to 11.64, uninstalling 12 and reinstalling the previous version.

Web browsing works fine, but attempting to check my mail now fails with an error message that suggests that the internal mail format has changed between versions 11 and 12. Is there a way to manually modify my files such that 11.64 will accept the contents of my ~/.opera/mail directory?

I use IMAP for mail, so my messages aren't lost (and that's why I didn't include ~/.opera/mail in my daily backups). But I'd prefer to avoid having to tediously reconfigure everything by hand.

Not that it matters, but I'm running Linux Mint Debian Edition x64.

My apologies for posting from Google Gropes, which is something I wouldn't do if Opera Mail were working.

TIA,
Warren

Opera 12 does have new internal mail format which is not compatible
with earlier versions. Fortunately, this new "format" seems only
apply to mail indexing and some mail INI settings. The mail message
storage, which are MBS files are not affected. So you can simply
move the mail store directory to a safe place, then import all the
MBS files into your email account (only do this when Opera is not
running). Of course, email settings may need to be reconfigured all
over again, especially for filters.

Drat; that tedious reconfiguration is exactly what I was hoping to avoid. Nonetheless, thanks for the quick and helpful reply.

The lesson to learn from this is that when I upgrade Opera, I should first copy the entire contents of ~/.opera and save it until I am sure that I'm happy with the new version. With that, I could have reverted completely and instantly.

(~/.opera is where the config files live on Linux; other OSs will differ.)

Yeah. I have my backup to copy all Opera directories. i.e.: the
programs and the profile. So I could restore it completely. I've
learnt this the hard way too.

Performing a clean reinstall of Opera 12 -- that is, renaming ./opera to
./opera-old and then installing and running Opera 12 -- gave me a great
browser without the browsing issues I had previously noticed. So in the
end I bit the bullet and reconfigured everything, resolving the root
issue. Many thanks in any case.
