ctrl-b = previous character in gmail rich text editor?

I use GMail for my email and I'm running Opera 10b2. When using the
Rich Text editor, ctrl-B insists on being "Bold" not "previous
character." In normal text fields, it works properly. Is there a way
to force this setting? Note that I get the same behavior on Linux and
Windows (I've added emacs-style text movement shortcuts manually on
the other platforms).
