After consulting "http://www.opera.com/linux/docs/plugins/", I
downloaded the ".rpm" version of Adobe's flash-plugin_10.0.12.36-1 and
successfully converted it to the ".deb" file by using "alien".
Is there anything else of which I should be aware before I install the
.deb file?.
All advice will be gratefully received.

Why didn't you download the .deb file instead of converting a .rpm file?

Also Debian Etch here, failed to install flashplayer10 .deb for
ubuntu8.04+, some newer lib versions are needed, but I am not willing to
upgrade them all until Debian Lenny.
Have tries the tar.gz package too, the installer inside only install
flash-plugin for browsers, that is fine. However, Opera
can not recognize the "libflashplayer.so" it installed, pain!
Both .deb and tar.gz are available on Adobe website
http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/ .
Hope you good luck!

I posted the query because I had a feeling that the story was not so
simple - despite the fact that running a simulated "dpkg install" on the
created .deb file gave a clean bill of health! I too am unwilling to
upgrade to Debian Lenny.

No problem in sticking with Flash Player 9 - if it is still available!
Perhaps the Opera team could be persuaded to provide additional details
and caveats in their plugin help file. :-(
My thanks to all who were good enough to share their experiences with
Flash Player 10.
