Print and Save command must be called through the plug-in command. Not the browser command.
I'm using FoxitReader, which comes with a plug-in that works with Opera.

I'm using the Adobe Reader viewer. I can't understand why I would need
to reinstall Adobe. I receive no errors when I open the PDF document.
And I can print the same PDF document from IE8 and Firefox 3.6. So it
can't be Adobe.

The browser offloads the PDF to a PDF viewer and it's the PDF viewer or
plugin that does the printing, no? I also use foxit reader, not adobe.

I figured out what I have to do to print. I opened the PDF document
from within Opera. I moved the mouse pointer into the reader's window
frame. I right clicked to open the context menu and selected print.
These steps produced a successful print job.
Your needs may be different, but when I download and open a PDF file
through Opera, I usually want to keep it around at least for a short
time, so I Save it. Then I subsequently Open it with the (free) Adobe
Reader, and I have no trouble printing it from there.

No need to save the PDF on my PC if it is being hosted on a website. I
just want to read it and print parts of it.
I don't know if this is your issue, but I have filed a bug report with
Opera about the print dialog in Linux (X11 Toolkit) where the page
size does not change to Letter/A4, or any other format except for the
first, which is something like A1 or A2. These are very large paper
sizes which, when printed, result in blank pages, because the content
is off in la la land and only a small region of the whole page is
printed.
