Anyone know what mime type a Microsoft Installer file
(*.msi) should be? That file type isn't set up in my Opera
and I'd like to add it.

Thanks!

It doesn't have a MIME type assigned to it. Servers -should- be
delivering MSI files as "application/octet-stream", just like
EXE files. If you're getting MSI files as "text/plain" or
something, that's a problem on the server side.

I would guess application/x-msi would be fine.
If the mime-type is wrong(or unknown), Opera will determine action using
the extension anyway.

Come to think about it, Opera will ask you what to do with the file if
it's not registered anyway.

application/x-msi will work.
Some M$ servers also use application/x-windows-installer or even
application/msi !
But unless it's in the official MIME lists, you're best off by using
*/x-ext for any extension. It certainly cannot do harm.

Although I must admit I have created 'MIME types' like application/x-
winamp3skin and application/x-pgpkey before ;)

It never asked me, it tries to open a page and display the
data, which of course isn't very effective. I have to
right-click and save-as in order to get the download. I want
to set up a file type entry which is why I asked.

Thanks.

Then you should contact the server administrator, and ask them to set up a
MIME Type for msi server-side. Many badly configured servers send
everything as text/plain, which will open in Opera.

This is up to the server administrators to fix, the other "solution" is to
add a MIME Type for the file type, and to set Opera not to trust server
MIME Types.

That's the MIME type, not the extension -- unless you've got that evil
option turned on that makes Opera mimic MSIE.
