I installed Windows 7 64-bit on a laptop today, and I
just couldn't find the 64-bit version of Opera for Windows.
I did a lot of Googling and finally got it at a URL not
found on the Opera.com website. How come 64-bit Opera
is made so hard to find? Is it due to be eased out like
64-bit Firefox?

You can get it from here:

English-only version:
http://ftp.opera.com/pub/opera/win/1215/en/

International version:
http://ftp.opera.com/pub/opera/win/1215/int/

Download the one that has "x64" in its file name.

Thanks for that URI. All this time I assumed 64 bit Opera was only
available for Linux.

OK, once on that page, what does one click on then?
I think the page has changed since you last saw it.

Yup, that's where I eventually found the 64-bit version after
a period of Googling. And now the question again: "Why is it
made so hard to find?" Evidently, Opera wants people to use
the 32-bit version. Is the 64-bit version only half-baked?

Yes, you can say that it's half baked. The 64-bit Windows version doesn't
work as well as the 32-bit version and the 64-bit version for other OSes.

It's a matter of code migration issue since it's not an easy thing to make a
64-bit version from a 32-bit program, considering that the program is
initially designed for 32-bit. OS specific 64-bit restrictions also
complicate things even more. This might also be the case for other browsers.

For Opera, the whole /original/ Opera is being converted to Opera-WebKit.
This might also mean that the original Opera will be dead, depending how the
/new/ Opera is implemented. The current development of original Opera has
stalled except maybe, for important security updates in the future.

How so? It's strange about their hiding of the 64-bit version now,
because it used to be linked quite visibly.

OK, I didn't notice that the "Architecture" was a drop-down list
of bit options. I thought it was a simple statement of 32-bits.
In the future, I'll investigate all paths. Since not all PC users know
what "architecture" means in the context of computers, I make this
suggestion to Opera:
Allow that selection via Radio Buttons instead of a drop-down list.

If there are more users using the 64-bit Windows version, there will be more
complaints, whining, rants. i.e.: bad feedbacks. We have enough of that
already. Moreover, Opera is too busy working on the Opera-WebKit.

I guess I'm just not a Power User because I don't find anything wrong
with Opera 64-bit. If it does croak, I'll just launch Opera 32-bit - which I
also have installed. With Opera-Webkit, I wish you speed and great success.

The 64-bit version crashes a lot in my Windows 7 Home. So I reverted
back to the 32-bit version to avoid the hassle.

It's not about crashing.. Teh x64 version ONLY supports 64-bit plugins and extensions - Opera add-ons.

Thing is, WHY be LAZY & not build 64-bit version of Opera - for those of us who want it/ need it.. Just put it away, on the ftp pub; stick it aside, somewhere. :-/

Opera stopped making the specific 64bit version and appears they complied 64bit together with 32bit in their current Opera desktop downloads.

If you want to see the list of specific 64bit versions, go to this link: http://ftp.opera.com/pub/opera/win/

The last version of 64bit is 12.18.

But I will tell you that version 12.18 will not show some websites because it does not support some current CSS styles. I just had that problem with a WordPress maintenance plugin and the developer of the plugin confirmed that Opera 64bit version 12.18 does have display issues with some CSS styles.

Hope this helps. :)

I'm using 12.18 64 bits, and I have very few problems; when I get a
problem, I right click and call "Open with Firefox"

...yes, but this version is the Chrome-Like version. Last real version of
Opera is 12.18 and the 64bit is here:
https://www.opera64bit.com/download/installer/Opera_1218_int_Setup_x64.exe

But the "son" of Opera 12.18 is Vivaldi, witch works fine and accepts
cardreading. You can find the 64bit version here:
https://downloads.vivaldi.com/stable/Vivaldi.1.12.955.38.x64.exe
