After updating msimg32.dll on Windows 98 SE, Opera 10.54 appears to
install and run without any problems. Without updating the DLL, Opera
will still run, but gives an error message about the transparency
feature.

On the same system, Opera 10.60 will not run. So maybe v10.54 is the
last to run on Win98.

The msimg32.dll v5.00.1693.1 that comes with Win98 needs to be
replaced with v5.00.2218.1 that comes with Windows ME. For details,
see this thread:

For me was 10.10 the last working version, neither 10.54 nor 10.60 worked
on my win98 computer :-(

Surely not much of todays software will run on a Win9x machine.

It *is* a 13 year old operating system...

Maybe so, but it's the fastest, most secure and stable os microshaft has
ever produced.

I hang on to 98 till late last year and finally migrated to XP when
I had to spend too much time fixing and patching. I believe my
last working Opera was 9.4.

I migrated from Netscape to Opera way back in the 90's. I like
Opera as it is extremely stable, almost never crash. The only
disadvantage, some sites especially Ebay which my wife visited
very often require IE.

Try Opera@USB, install it to the HD. Best Opera ever. Everything
works with NO setup.

Not IME. Also, Opera has a "identify as" IE of FFox switch if
you DO run across site which is retarded enough to require IE.
My advice is, leave instead. Lots of other places to go.

I am very happily running Opera 10.60 on my Win98SE machine.

But before downloading it. I installed Kernel v4.5 to extend Win98SE
capabilities.

What is the problem?

Opera 10.61 runs very nicely here under Win98SE.

Did you download the installer from Opera's web site, or did you perform
an automatic update? Apparently, there have been issues with the automatic
update and Win9x systems not installing all required files. Using the
installer from www.opera.com should fix that.
