Hi. I'm just looking for HTTP download managers and came across
Flashget, which I'm trying out right now.

http://www.amazesoft.com/index.htm

Anyway, there's a separate "Opera plugin," which I've also installed,
but I don't know what it's supposed to do. I don't find any help
about it, and I can't see that anything would have changed, like in
the way of an extra download option or anything.

Does anyone happen to use the program and know what the plugin is sup-
posed to be doing?

And on a related note, are there any other web download managers that
any of you can recommend? Opera is better than any browser I know in
keeping track of and automatically retrying downloads. But I'm look-
ing for something even more persistent in dealing with unreliable web
servers.

I would recommend not to use any download manager plugin with Opera,
Opera's plugin / file association design is poorly suited to dl manager
plugin's.

Use the clipboard method instead.

If you have installed the plug-in correctly, clicking on a download
link automatically transfers the download to FlashGet. After running
the plug-in exe file , go to File>Preferences>Plugins in Opera and
click on Find Plugins. You can set up the types of files FlashGet
should intercept for download from the Options>Monitor menu in
FlashGet by adding or removing them from the window (by typing a
semicolon followed by the filetype after a comma for every new type of
file e.g
( ,;.wsz for winamp skins ).
Enjoy both these fine programs.
Check out http://www.geocities.com/operacer for more tips and plugin
info.

What's a download plugin? One that's specifically marked in HTML
somehow? Because right-clicking and choosing "Save link document"
will only open the usual transfer window.

The only thing I've noticed so far is that sometimes when I copy the
link URL to the clipboard the new job window automatically opens in
FlashGet. If it doesn't I have to press the "new job" button.

It's in the list of plugins already, without me having run any find.

Ah, I see. Haven't downloaded too many files with those extensions
yet. I'll try adding to those.

I was happy with the FlashGet plugin until I found that the PlugIn took
over another function that I didn't want to lose. I have a shortcut in
my right click Send To menu for Internet Explorer 5.5 Favorites. I can
right click a favorite and send it to Internet Explorer which pops up a
download diaglog box. This is helpful when I want to open a Favorite in
a new browser window. Anyway, with the Opera FlashGet plugin, my
shortcut click opened a new IE browser window with a text message
something to the effect that the download or file or what have you had
been transferred to FlashGet and then nothing happened. I ended up
having to uninstall FlashGet, which didn't solve it. The plugins had to
be deleted separately. That still didn't do it. I ended up finally
having to edit the registry to restore my settings. Later, I
reinstalled FlashGet (and quickly uninstalled the Aureate/Radiate stuff
that it so graciously includes) and gave up on the FlashGet plugin for
Opera.

FlashGet is AdWare and installs Aureate/Radiate files on your system.
If that concerns you (and it should !) check out AdAware , a free
download from LavaSoft
(http://www.lavasoftusa.com/) that scans your system for all types of
adware/spyware files and offers to remove them for you. It is the
safest way to remove adware files - updated signature files are posted
on their website so make sure you're using the latest ones.

That's exactly what I did, but thanks for the reinforcement!
