Ladies and gentlemen, you're witnessing history. With this release,
Opera Software marks the first time in its history that updates for
all our desktop platforms based on the same code have been released
simultaneously.

Opera 7.50 Preview 4 for Windows is available for download. As usual,
discuss the new version in opera.beta and in the my.opera.com Beta
Testing forum. Please do not distribute the download link directly,
but link to the post in opera.beta or in the my.opera.com Beta Testing
forum.

Due to the experimental nature of this release, upgrading a previous
Opera installation is not recommended. If you'd like to test your mail
from 7.23 in this release, delete the \Opera\Mail\ folder, then copy
your entire Mail folder from 7.23 to your 7.50 Preview 4 installation.

Download Preview 4:

http://snapshot.opera.com/windows/o750p4_3714.exe (build 3714)

=== Major Changes ===
* Continued User Interface Experimentation*
In our efforts to improve the user interface, there have been a couple
more changes in this preview. The Personal bar has been reenabled by
default, the Start panel has been replaced by a Search panel, and
maximized panels and manage dialogs have been dropped in favor of
manage pages/windows. There's also a new <q>New page</q> button on the
Page bar that makes it easy to open a new page.

*Improved Opera Mail Resource Usage *
Opera Mail (the mail client formerly known as M2) has received lots of
attention this time around. It should use less memory, require less
time to start-up, and clean-up after itself better.

* Optimized Performance *
In our on-going effort to be "The fastest browser in the world," this
release should start-up and exit faster. Doing routine user interface
actions like toggling and resizing panels should also be faster.

A detailed list of changes is available at
http://snapshot.opera.com/windows/w750p4.html#detail.

How can I get rid of it? I already have a New page button in the toolbar,
which I never use, since it's much easier to just do the mouse gesture.

Pretty much the same way you do most twiddling in Opera, right click on it
and choose the relevant option. In this case the "Show new page button"
option.

Right click it, unselect it.

Does this include not installing over P3?

I must be missing something, but I don't have that option in my menu - the
only items in the menu are "New page", "Close all", "Close all but active",
"Customize toolbars" and "Skin". Even if I open the Customize toolbars
dialog box, that button still acts as a normal button...

Switch back to the "Opera Standard" menu setup (via Preferences > Toolbars and
menus) and try again.

Once the "New page" button is removed from the page bar, you can switch back
to your custom menu setup.

No, you should be alright with that. You may want to backup your
files first, though, just in case. Also, toolbar changes won't be
carried over, so try the default toolbar setup if you have problems.

Wow, that is fun. I did as you said. The first time Opera crashed
with an error message about an virtual (thread?) error when switching
back to my modification. The second time around the same error
occurred upon closing Opera. Now, opening it the third time everything
is alright, the modified Menu setup is chosen, and I can close Opera
without a crash or an error.

BTW, how many ways to open a new page will the developers add (we
already have at least three plus this new button)?

Ouch! I didn't have that much excitement ( thankfully ;-)

I think they're working on a new brain implant that simply reads your mind.

I tried it with disastrous results (lost mail and broke default
toolbars). That's probably I did it in Linux on a shared-config setup.

My apologies if my reply is the one that led you to think it
would be safe to do so. Since this is the thread about the Windows
release, that's what I was referring to.

Oh, no it wasn't; I've never had any problems before but I'm not
complaining now - I know the risks of this job.

BTW, I posted about the problem in "FAT32 mail directory not working" in
opera.linux.

Not sure what you mean by the latter. Mine are carried over; e.g., by
practice I combine toolbars and get rid of the Personal bar, and it's
still not there. I thought the release notes say it's default in this
version. Maybe I'll have to install P4 in a new directory to see all
the new stuff.

Opera crashes during reindexing. It is reproduced.

"Merged and re-enabled Image and User/Author mode toggle buttons"

Don't know about re-enabled because I've never seen this before. BUT: This is
a horribly bad idea. This merged button won't give you any indication about
the current mode (user/author) and to make bad pages readable you end up
fiddling with that tiny arrow a couple of times. Where's the relation of
image loading behavior and user styling?

Glad the old separate buttons still exist and work,

Usually, the effect is pretty drastic and so very visible in the page.

> and to make bad pages readable you end up
> fiddling with that tiny arrow a couple of times. Where's the relation of
> image loading behavior and user styling?

The relation is that both change the display: less author control, more
user control.

> Glad the old separate buttons still exist and work,

That's right. I think the problem is, that both buttons are unique to
Opera, offer interesting functionality, but are probably not very often
used by 'common' users. So we want to show the functionality, but don't
let it make Opera appear cluttered. The solution in the previous previews
was 'power users can drag them to the toolbar if they want it'. Together
with the reappearance of the rewind button and a separate fast forward
button, we suddenly get a less clean toolbar...

I see the problem. A cluttered interface is wrong. And hiding unique and
interesting functionality is wrong.
But my original point was that the merging of the two buttons is just
another way to clutter the interface. The clutter is somewhat hidden in
that case, but it's still there. I'm afraid that the merged button will
drive new users away from both features, so you might as well hide them.

My personal opinion is that OS is a little too afraid of interface clutter
than it should be. Just look at the IE addons like the google bar that
people use quite frequently. Now that's what I call clutter.

A much better option to get the UI more user friendly is the labeling of
different functions. The tool tip we get now for the image control button
says "Show images", if it is set to show all images. How about "Hide all
images"? Other places worth checking are cookie and wand dialogs. I guess
relabeling from "Yes/No" to "OK/Cancel" didn't help that much. There are
other places that might confuse (that in fact _do_ confuse) users (cookie
manager, e.g.). Personally, I prefer a cluttered interface to confusing
labels.

Of course, I see the point. But I doubt that there is a way to make an
intuitive hide-images button when the intuitions of users are based on the
UI nightmare implemented in MSIE.
