The Opera at Florham series announces its next musicale
titled, Opera in the Springtime, on Sunday, March 10 at 3 p.m. in Lenfell Hall,
Hennessy Hall, at Fairleigh Dickinson University’s College at Florham.
The venue, Lenfell Hall located in Hennessy Hall (The Mansion), was the drawing
room of the Twombly family when they lived in the 100-room mansion.
The musicale is organized by Opera at Florham’s new Artistic Director, David Wroe,
conductor and music director of Westfield Symphony and Musica Morristown, and
will consist of pianist, Doug Martin, and three singers: mezzo soprano Theresa
Buschholz, soprano Sang-Eun Lee, and tenor Kirk Dougherty.
Martin combines the early 20th century traditions with a modern sense of expansion.
He conducted 100 performances of Baz Luhrmann’s La Bohème on Broadway in San
Francisco, New York, and a three-month-run in Los Angeles. For Anchorage Opera’s
opening night gala in October 2010, Martin guided Metropolitan Opera artist
Janinah Burnett, Yegishe Manucharyan, Todd Robinson, and local Alaskan artists. In
2011, Martin conducted a production of Barbiere di Siviglia.
Buschholz is a graduate of the Yale University Opera Program, Indiana University,
and the University of Northern Iowa. Her most recent performances included
Fordham University Choir for Mozart’s Requiem, and with the New Jersey
Philomusica as Alto Soloist in Michael Haydn’s Requiem and Mozart’s Dominican
Vespers. She has also been heard recently with the Bard College Symphonic Chorus
as Maria in Respighi’s Laud to the Nativity and at Lincoln Center with the American
Symphony Orchestra in Franz Schreker’s opera Der ferne Klang and Schumann’s
oratorio Das Paradies und die Peri.
Lee is a soprano with a range of more than three octaves who specializes in the high
coloratura soprano repertoire, as well as in bel canto style and early music. She was
Ilia in Idomeneo with Maestro Myung-Whun Chung with the Korea National Opera.
With the Korea National Opera, she played the role of Pamina in Die Zauberflöte,
Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor, and Cio-Cio San in Madama Butterfly. She has
performed Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia with Opera Theater of Lakeland; the
Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflöte with International Vocal Arts Institute; Norina
in Don Pasquale with Connecticut Grand Opera, conducted by Will Crutchfield;
Pamina, Despina in Così fan tutte, and Nannetta in Falstaff with Natchez Opera
Festival, among many others.
Dougherty’s career is in concert and opera in the United States. He has performed
with Tri-Cities Opera, Anchorage Opera, Teatro Grattacielo, Utah Festival Opera and
Musical Theatre, Duluth Festival Opera, and Salt Marsh Opera, among others. He
recently performed principal roles in Montemezzi’s La Nave with Teatro Grattacielo,
and in Victoria Bond’s new opera Mrs. President at Anchorage Opera.
Tickets are $30 for regular admission, $25 for seniors, and $10 for students under
