Hi,

Are there a commercially available heart rate strap from which one can easily download heart rate variability (RR) data?  And are there ones that have on-board memory so that I can sync up once every couple days?

I've looked around but haven't found one that has these features.  Thanks for your help.

Hello Avik,

theoretically you could try using any Garmin or Suunto watch to collect the information. Both of them are capable to upload data to brand's community websites. Don't know if any export possibilities are available.

Sunnto t6 or the sunnto t6c will do the job (syncs to watch).  Sunnto also has a stand alone memory strap.

Keep in mind, not all watches will get you RR data. For sunnto, you need the higher end models.

There's a couple of people working on the suunto stuff now. I've got the keys now, but haven't had time to get going on the protocol yet. There's also

They've got some wireshark dumps he's working on from the t3c, seems to be making decent progress.

Someone actually got most of the suunto protocol working with like, visual basic a couple of years ago, but I can't seem to find his page anymore.

I use the Suunto Memory Belt. Holds about 2 days of data for continuous use. Battery lasts for months. If you use the windows-only "Training Manager" software, it'll calculate and dump RR data.

And will export to pretty nice XML. However, I'd still like direct access to the data. It's essentially the same thing as a t6 (shows up as a t6 in the software) but doesn't requires a watch. It uses a USB -> TTL chip under the hood IIRC.

Anyone know if there's inherent differences in the recording of the memory belt versus the simple belt that comes with the watch? My hope was to get the ANT stick talking to the simple HR belt so I can just wear it and log while at the computer (until I splurge on a memory belt for full time wear), but I'm wondering if I'll be getting the same data.

Also, is the memory belt ANT+?

Shameless plug: we are currently working on a dongle that would let to connect ANT+ and/or ANT devices to Android phones. So soon the collection/analysis of data will be available on the mobile.

The memory belt is ANT, not ANT+. You have the option of transmitting, recording or both. I don't have a watch, so I only have the recorded data. Attached is a sample of the output. It only RECORDS in 10 second increments, so I have to imagine that it transmits at a higher rate. Also, I have no idea if that's an average over the period or if it's just sampling at 10 second intervals.
