Greetings,

I would like to put forth two OpenXT Logo concepts for evaluation: one with a Wolf and one with an Orca. The purpose is to provide means for OpenXT to get visible recognition beyond out architecture diagrams and source code.

Core concept of this initial submission:
Orcas and wolves are considered highly social, highly protective animals,
symbolizing the collaborative, open-source as well as closed, protective,
high assurance nature of some components of OpenXT. The shield shape is
obviously a symbol for software security and trust. The  forward facing
triangle shape symbolizes play, interoperability, innovation.

The simplicity of the logo allows them to scale well, being recognizable at a 60px x 60px resolution. Both the iconography and the textual representation can be segregated and used independently where appropriate (e.g. UIVM sections). These are black-and-white to illustrate the concept, but can be colorized during refinement if desired.

I propose that, if either are selected for refinement and adoption, integration take place after the OXT 6.0 release in order to not delay the pending release.

Please post personal preferences, comments, criticisms, etc. If you don't like either or would like to propose alternatives, please contribute as well. If there isn't an obvious consensus on a selection, we can do something like a Confluence-based vote or alternative means, preferably by the next OpenXT Community Call while I have the artist's availability to further refine based on any suggestions.

I personally prefer the wolf, because wolves are cool and because dog. Also, the orca is reminiscent of the San Jose Sharks....poor sharks...but that just may be me.

I like the wolf, not crazy about the text, don't get the "play".

I personally like the wolf better than the orca.

One suggestion though. The shield behind the wolf is hardly visible. Maybe we can scale the size of the head to a smaller size? That way it would fit better inside of the shield.

I like the wolf and the text. I agree that it is hard to tell it is a shield though...

Thanks, Kevin -- this is great stuff to see.

I like the font and the modern, futuristic image it conveys. I like the text placement, the bold black and light grey contrast, and I like the shield shape and thickness.

The art is good - it's bold and clear.

The Orca is OK and of the two, that would be my preference. I don't know much about them and I didn't know they were social, so that's cool to know.

I'm not with the Wolf - I first thought it was a Lion (and it was carrying an angry Wizard Bat). It gives the shield a neckbeard, which I guess could convey some Unix ancestry, but it obscures the shield shape quite a bit.

More objectively, the wolf is at odds with the properties of being Open, Welcoming, Reassuring, or Stable. It's pretty definitely "back off or you will have a serious problem".
A wolf pack has an authoritarian social structure and is hostile to outsiders.

I'm no expert at this but with a few minutes effort, my thought was: Otters.
 * semi-aquatic: adaptable to different environments
 * varying social structure: some largely solitary while others live in large groups
 * a middle tier of the animal ecosystem, so interacts with upstream and downstream species
     * ie. hunters and has capacity to defend when required, but not alpha-predators
 * playful, so creative, innovative
 * able to use tools
 * a male is a "dog" so Kevin still gets to be happy

I think the animal idea in general is good even if you guys don't dig the aquatic mammal.
