Hi all,

the new version of our site is up! I am posting in the discuss list so everybody can review and give feedback on this thread before we post it to the announcements mailing list. Any feedback is welcome, but if you don't have time to review everything please look at least at the parts of the projects you each have been working on and make sure you're happy with the copy. We probably should add another project for "data gathering" work we do, so anybody feel free to propose what it could look like.

This was mostly the work of Matteo (I helped out with a few of the pages and Stephen helped out with reviewing contents) so we all should be grateful to him for making this awesome site, big improvement from the previous one! :)

Thanks,

- Giovanni

Let me add my massive respect for Matteo for masterminding this and Giovanni for substantial help.

This new site is exciting and please make revisions (current version is the master branch on the website github repo) but it does underline the need for fleshing out the wiki.  Please if you can help with the wiki migration too it will go a long way.

Best,
  Stephen

I really like the website guys, congratulations - huge improvement. As requested I have some suggestions:

1. I think the green banner (The one containing the title of each page) is far too thick, especially considering there is a top navigation bar - on my 15" laptop on Chrome more than half the screen is taken up by the "who are you" banner for example, I would make the top and bottom margins much smaller and make the font smaller also. Similarly, on the "Projects" Section on my laptop it's not obvious that the text continues because it doesn't appear on my screen. Generally the website appears better on a zoom level of 75%. - I would go for a top banner the same thickness as the OSB website here http://opensourcebrain.org/projects

2. The main body text is also sometimes too large. On the "projects" site here http://www.openworm.org/projects.html it's great but here http://www.openworm.org/get_involved.html for instance it's a bit too big.

3. The blog is something I really like - you could give it some more prominence?

I guess this is "jumbotron subhead".  Matteo, are there any alternatives to this?

Looks like it is a matter of changing from the class "lead" to the class "span6".  Will that work, Matteo?

3. The blog is something I really like - you could give it some more prominence?

The blog drives the "latest news" on the home page.  Maybe it would help to make "Latest news" into a hyperlink pointing directly to the blog?

Thanks for the feedback Mike :)

1. Main point is not about screen size per se but more about display resolution. Today there is a wide range of resolutions available in the market. Older machines would work around 1024px in width (even 800px if you dig enough) while new ones go easily up to 2560px.
Bootstrap which we used to, optimises the standard zoom for resolutions in the higher spectrum, which works better in the long run. At the same time the framework allows the website to scale perfectly using the zoom.
I would personally prefer to stick with the proportions coming from the original CSS. Also if we where to make the site smaller to fit in smaller resolutions higher res users would have to start zooming to 125%.

2. Yeah, maybe there's too much text there, will get reviewed as we keep editing the content.

3. I also think the blog is a very good resource and you remind me I have to style it up in a more consistent way with the rest of the website. As Stephen says the news in the home are being fetched from there and linking the title to the blog sounds like a good idea!

Cheers,
Matteo

Oops, after reading Jim's email  I only just realised the home page wasn't a splash screen!

Yeah, new website is looking really good!

I would agree with Mike on the green banner though. I have looked at it on a 1920p desktop monitor and a 2560x1600 tablet. The green banner on the home page takes up half the screen on the desktop monitor and virtually the whole screen on the tablet so that it looks like there is nothing to scroll down to. Kind of like when Apple hid their apology to Samsung ;-) On the other pages the size isn't that bad, could you keep it the same as those?

On the home page where you have Source Code, Current Progress and Roadmap, the first thing I tried to do was click on the pretty icons - would be nice if the were hyper-linked.

Cheers
Jim
