Is This Server Configuration Sufficient for 5,000 OpenWISP2 Devices

Hi Team,

First of all, thank you for developing and maintaining OpenWISP. It has been a great platform for managing and monitoring network devices, and we appreciate the continuous support provided by the community.

I would like to seek your guidance regarding hardware sizing for an upcoming OpenWISP2 deployment.

I am planning to deploy an OpenWISP2 server to manage approximately 5,000 devices. The primary use cases are:

  • Basic device monitoring 
  • Firmware management and upgrades
  • Standard OpenWISP2 features (Controller, Monitoring, and Firmware Upgrader)

The proposed server specifications are:

  • RAM: 32 GB DDR4/DDR5 ECC Memory
  • Storage: 1 TB NVMe SSD
  • Processor: AMD EPYC or Intel Xeon (server-grade processor)
  • CPU: 24 physical cores with a base clock speed of 3.25 GHz or higher
  • Network: Minimum 1 Gbps Ethernet

Would these specifications be sufficient to handle around 5,000 devices with the above workload?

Additionally, do you have any recommendations regarding CPU, RAM, storage, PostgreSQL, Redis, Celery workers, or any other tuning required for this scale?
