Hello, I am a beginner who is just learning Openwisp.

I have a few questions, so please answer them.



1. Can you tell me what management protocol Openwisp is using?

2. I understood that the RESTful API listed in the Openwisp official document does not manage the Openwisp server from a central server, but rather manages the devices listed in Openwisp. Is my understanding correct?

3. The official document says to install Openwisp-config and Openwisp-monitoring when installing Openwisp. Does it work if I only install Openwisp-config? In other words, I am curious about whether a monitoring package is also required to operate Openwisp.

I think the questions I asked may be too basic or maybe they shouldn't be asked. We apologize in advance, and we would appreciate it if you could answer only the parts you can.

It's not a standard protocol, it's a combination of periodic HTTPS requests, you can find more about this by studying the source code:

https://github.com/openwisp/openwisp-config/blob/master/openwisp-config/files/openwisp.agent

I think in the future we may be able to support other standard protocols.

The REST API of OpenWISP allows to manage several aspects of OpenWISP, whether related to devices like changing the configuration, sending shell commands or the change the data in the OpenWISP database like adding new users, create configuration templates and so on.

If you don't need the monitoring you can get rid of it both on the server and on openwrt.
