Hello! I'm setting up a new openwisp server and my board (which connects behind a firewall) is showing as critical with the ping test failing. At first I figured the board was pinging the server, but from reading the code it seems the other way around. Is my understanding correct then? That this is the server trying to ping the device?

Thanks in advance
Daniel

Hii,
     Yes, your understanding is correct.

The server attempts to ping the devices using their Management IP. So in this case, it's the server initiating the ping to the board, not the other way around.

Thanks Manu,

Daniel, if you read this page fully and also follow a few of the internal links, you should gain better understanding of this part:

Setting Up the Management Network, especially the section "Why OpenWISP Needs to Reach Your Devices".

I hope this helps.

Oh, thank you SO much! This is the answer we needed! We were jumping through hoops to get the ping check to happen through the VPN, messing with the board's DNS settings, etc. Was able to ping the board from the server at a shell, but the check was still failing. This solve it all, thank you!

The only other thing we still need is to have the VPN device added to the firewall "lan" zone via uci add_list firewall.zone1.device=<vpn_name>, which is fine.

btw, Federico is my middle name! :D
