Accepted Projects Announced Tomorrow

Hi everyone,

Google will communicate the accepted projects tomorrow.

From what I know, available slots are more limited than in previous years.

This will mean that many of the great applicants we had won't make it.

I have experienced resentment from GSoC applicants in the past when they weren't selected, so every year I routinely send this warning beforehand.

I ranked the projects based on several factors, listed here from most important to least:

1. Impact of the contributor on the project: coordinates with maintainers to select high-priority issues (in contrast to exclusively picking issues which seem easy but lack priority).

2. Seniority: People who start contributing early demonstrate more experience and usually receive a higher ranking (in contrast to contributors who start engaging within 30-40 days of the application deadline).

3. Demonstrated autonomy, collaboration, and persistence (unlike contributors who constantly need micromanagement, give up easily and fail to communicate with the rest of the group by working in solo mode).

4. Good proposal: the proposal must demonstrate a solid understanding of the problem at hand and provide a realistic path to implementation.

If you contributed actively but weren't selected, it's because other contributors worked harder, started earlier, engaged more with maintainers, prioritized high impact issues, collaborated with other developers and submitted a convincing proposal.

Several good candidates won't make it, even with high rankings, due to the limited number of available slots.

If you like contributing to OpenWISP, are learning new things and are having a positive experience, I welcome you to continue. Opportunities always arise for those who do good work, whether through GSoC or other FOSS funding.
