According to the latest Babson Research Group survey(1), 61% of faculty agree that textbooks are too expensive for students. Open textbooks and non-textbook open educational resources (OER) are one way for faculty to eliminate or drastically reduce the cost of academic success. These cost barriers are particularly impactful for historically underserved students and high-enrollment classes, who perform better in courses with zero-cost materials.
OER defined:
Open Educational Resources (OER) are freely accessible and publicly available teaching, learning, and research resources that reside in the public domain or have been released under an intellectual property license that permits their free use, reuse, modification, and sharing with others. They include full courses, course materials, modules, textbooks, streaming videos, tests, software, and any other tools, materials, or techniques used to support access to knowledge.
