Dear Colleagues,

VIVA, Virginia's Academic Library Consortium, is pleased to announce the opening of a new round of VIVA Open Grants. Applications are open today for all grant types, including the new Grants for Libraries, and are due on November 5, 2025. Grants are available in the following categories:

VIVA Open Adopt Grants

$2,000

VIVA Open Adopt Grants support individuals as they transition to pre-existing Open Educational Resources (OER). Proposed projects may involve adopting a single OER or a group of resources. Associated courses must be credit-bearing, and instructors must commit to providing VIVA with a final report and an openly licensed syllabus. Any materials created with this funding must be openly licensed and made available for feature on VIVA Open, VIVA’s OER repository.

VIVA Open Creation Grants
$15,000-$50,000

VIVA Open Creation Grants (formerly VIVA Open Course Grants) support teams as they create high quality materials for credit-bearing courses at VIVA institutions. Proposed projects should address an area of need in open education, result in significant student cost avoidance, create course materials and methods that are replicable in other courses and classrooms, and are pedagogically innovative. Grant recipients create course materials and then work with VIVA to publish them in a professional and accessible format. All materials must be piloted in the recipients’ classrooms, peer reviewed, copyedited, and accessibility checked by VIVA publishing, as well as eligible for other publishing services, including design and typesetting.

VIVA Open Grants for Libraries

$5,000-$30,000

VIVA Grants for Libraries offers funding and support to libraries in their efforts to expand, promote, and empower instructors and students in meeting curricular needs on campus.  Grants for Libraries include a wide variety of projects, including projects that create course materials, guides and resources, work with departments to do large scale adoptions or test bank sprints, and prepare instructors to meet student needs through programming or training.

This application will be the first in a two-part application process for VIVA Open Creation Grants (formerly Open Course Grants) and VIVA Grants for Libraries. Finalists will be identified after the initial application process in those two categories. VIVA Open Adopt Grants will be awarded on the strength of this application alone.

This will be the only opportunity to apply for VIVA Open Grants during the 2025-2026 academic year.

The VIVA Open Grant applications must be filled out online, but a pdf preview can be found, along with the application link, on the grants application and RFP page. There you will also find the RFP and the application instructions, which you are encouraged to read.
More information can be found in the following ways:

Please feel free to reach out if you should you wish to discuss proposal ideas or any matters related to open educational resources.

Sincerely,
Anita
