Invitation for faculty who teach: Wed, Nov 10th "Introduction to Open Textbooks" - 1 hour session

Dear Colleagues, 

Please share with interested faculty who teach. 

The University Libraries is hosting a one-hour "Introduction to Open Textbooks" via Zoom on Wednesday, November 10th from 10-11am. Registration is required: https://bit.ly/intro-open-textbooks

This workshop is designed for faculty who teach, but is open to anyone within the university community. 

Faculty who participate in the workshop -- and within six weeks submit a brief written review of an open textbook in their discipline -- will receive a $200 stipend funded by VIVA, the Virtual Library of Virginia https://vivalib.org. [Others are welcome to attend but only faculty and staff who teach are eligible for VIVA's stipend. Stipend eligibility unfortunately does not extend to GTAs though GTAs are welcome to attend.]

Open textbooks may be selected from the Open Textbook Library https://open.umn.edu/opentextbooks. The Open Textbook Library contains 950+ open textbooks spanning many disciplines which are openly licensed and freely available online. 

This workshop includes:
- Discussion of course material perceptions and preferences
- Impacts of course material costs on students
- What we mean (and don’t mean) by “open textbook”
- Creative Commons licenses
- VT’s Guidelines on Open Educational Resources (OER) and Open Textbooks
- Other faculty reviews

The workshop is co-hosted by Virginia Tech and Old Dominion University. It will be co-presented by Anita Walz, Assistant Director of Open Education, University Libraries and Karen Vaughan, Head of Scholarly Communication and Publishing, Old Dominion University.
