Dear,

I hope you are doing well.

I am currently using OpenVSP to design a fuselage, but I am encountering an issue with the surface quality. Specifically, the surfaces are not smooth and appear to have "bumps" or "shoe-like" protrusions where components are attached.

Could you please provide guidance on how I can make these surfaces smoother? If there are specific settings or techniques in OpenVSP that I should use to resolve this, I would appreciate your advice.

Thank you for your help.

Best regards,

Syed Mujahid

Take a look at the Skinning section of the OpenVSP Ground School.  If you still have questions, please follow up here.

Hi Brandon,

Thank you for the suggestion. I have reviewed the Skinning section of the OpenVSP Ground School, but I am still unable to resolve the issue with the surface smoothness.

Could you please provide further assistance or specific tips on how to eliminate the bumps and protrusions I am experiencing?

Best regards,

Syed Mujahid

Please post your *.vsp3 file.

You need to use fewer cross sections.  You need to understand how setting angle and strength affects the shape.  The video explains those things very well.

You aren't doing a good job of explaining the problems you're having, what you've tried, or what your level of understanding is.

You are not making it possible for anyone to help you.

Hi Rob,

I agree with you that using fewer cross sections is likely necessary, but when I tried reducing them, I found it difficult to maintain the desired shape of the fuselage.

I have been working with the skinning tab to adjust the angles and strength, yet I am still struggling to achieve a smooth surface and eliminate the bumps. I am attaching my *.vsp3 file here so you can see exactly what I have done.

I would really appreciate it if you could take a look and let me know where I am going wrong and what specific adjustments I should make to get a smoother result.

Best regards,
Syed Mujahid

I would attempt to model this fuselage with four cross sections.

One at the nose, one at the tail, and one at the front / aft of the center cylindrical section.

The angles forward of the front cylindrical section should be zero.  Likewise, the angles aft of the aft cylindrical section should be zero.

That will greatly reduce the number of knobs you need to adjust to get a good shape.

Only add more cross sections if you find that you absolutely can not achieve the shape you want with fewer.
