All,

I've taken a shot at writing an airfoil data file converter. I've
written it in Python with the plan that it can easily be converted
into a web based converter as Rob had mentioned here
http://groups.google.com/group/openvsp/browse_thread/thread/ee330e517f9b1e24
user mod_python or cgi.

My specific aim was to create an expandable utility that supports the
two formats that the UIUC database is in. I've tested it with both the
Selig and Lednicer formats and it works with both. I believe that
OpenVSP already can import the Selig format, but not the Lednicer one,
so the script does offer some expanded capability.

For now, I've put the script in a new git repository:
https://github.com/termain/OpenVSP-Utilities

I welcome any suggestions or new file formats.

How about a 3 column format like DATCOM uses.  First column is the x position (has to be the same for upper and lower airfoil surface) second column is the upper surface from leading to trailing edge and third column is the lower surface from leading to trailing edge.  The folks over at Desktop Aeronautics have a java applet to do this, but as far as I know it is the only one of its kind.

Because then you force the x locations to be identical, and sometimes this isn't desirable.  We already read so many formats that I don't see much benefit to add more

I'm not against writing more standalone converters. Jon, if you can get me the specifications for them, I'll take a look at it when I get the free time.

VSP No reads three airfoil formats with no converter needed.  Our own *.af and both UIUC formats (Selig and Lednicer).  I would hope that these would cover most needs.

It is easy enough to add more directly to VSP, but I am strongly against creating another new airfoil file format.

If you can provide examples of the exact format from either DATCOM or the Desktop Aeronautics tool, it might be worth making a reader -- though it would be better if they read Selig/Lednicer too.

What is your actual need?

Rob
