I am having a very hard time doing FEA of a wing structure. Can anyone give a detailed info about the process please. Have been designing my whole project in OpenVSP and now my submission is near.

Pavan,

With VSP Structure Analysis Module, we are able to do Wing Structure analysis. We will be releasing v2 of VSP SAM soon. As of right now we have v1.1 on our website (http://vspsam.ae.utexas.edu/).
You can find my tutorial presentation from the workshop 2013 here: http://www.openvsp.org/wiki/lib/exe/fetch.php?media=vsp_sam_tutorial_2013.pdf
Also, here is the link for v1.1 user manual: http://vspsam.ae.utexas.edu/archieve/Releases/VSP%20SAM%20Users%20Guide_1_1.pdf

Let me know if you have any further questions regarding VSP SAM.

Hi there,
Does anyone know how to use openVSP with VSP SAM to do a Fuel Tank sizing design on an Aircraft, e.g calculating the CG location, doing static analysis.
I could use any guidance.

Hersh,

I've tried running VP Sam with the A-6E mesh files online, as well as my own, following the tutorial and the program keeps getting stuck at "Entering Wing Tear Op- Detecting Wing Tears". I was wondering if this is a typical error, and if you know of a fix.

Thank you.

Hi there,

First of all, sorry for the late reply. There is a way to do Fuel Tank sizing design for wing tanks. In VSP SAM v2, which we released this weekend, you can add fuel loads. It's under "Fuel Loads" You define the boundaries such as forward/aft spar and inboard/outboard rib. Then you can define an overall packing factor which is a multiplier for the volume of the tanks. VSP SAM can output volume of each tank. It also logs all the messages in "SAM_Log.txt" file.

Currently, static analysis is possible, calculating CG location is not possible. VSP SAM only works on single-section wing structures currently. We will be releasing support for multi-section wings soon.

Hersh

Sean,

Sounds like you have an error with CalculiX installation. Did you run the "install.bat" file that comes with the VSP SAM package ? Try the latest version (v2) we released last weekend. In your case, VSP SAM is not able to run CalculiX FEM solver.

If all of the above fails, lastly check your "CalculiX Path" tab. Make sure it's pointing to your CalculiX installation.

Regards,

Thanks for your quick reply!

I ran the install batch file and kept the default settings for CalculiX per the install readme (tried both 32/ 64 bit versions for the solver and SAM v1 and 2).

Opened the VSPSAMXcute.exe to start the program.

Verified the CalculiX path in VSP SAM was correct:
C:\Program Files (x86)\bConverged\CalculiX

I've tried this on 3 win 7 computers with the same issue.

Is there an additional step to link VSP SAM to CalculiX?

Actually I compared it the the A6E input file and got it to run.
Thank you for your help

Hi Sajjad,

This was 4 years ago and I don’t remember how I did it. That said, the package isn’t compatible with the newer v.3… of OpenVSP, unless it’s been updated.

Sorry I couldn’t be of help.
