Hello everyone,

Using OpenVSP for a senior design class at Purdue University, I'd like
to import my OpenVSP file in Catia to be able to add some other stuff
such as tail ramp, ...

Do you know if it's possible? (I saw a possible way was to make the
file into *.3dm and then use a converter which is not free...)

Thanks,

Jonathan

We don't directly support Catia, because it is so expense and because it is CAD that is geared towards manufacturing - not quickly being creative in conceptual design.  But if you want to get to Catia, you can export a Rhino 3dm file, download a free version of Rhino (which gives you the full version for 25 saves, or buy a student version for $150).  Then you can export to Catia from Rhino.

But I have no idea why you'd want to export to Catia - you can do much easier visualizations directly in Rhino.  But your choice...

Catia simply is the wrong tool for conceptual design.  Expecting one tool to do everything from idea to final manufacturing is like thinking a hammer can fix everything in the house.

Jonathan, thanks for trying OpenVSP.

The way to get to something like Catia through Rhino is through a
standardized file format like STEP or IGES.

Rhino can export STEP/IGES files in many formats (tuned for different
destinations). You should experiment with a few of those to find what
works best.

Catia should be able to read in either of those kinds of files.

Keep in mind, the resulting model will not be parametric like VSP --
it will also not be built-up like a normal Catia file. It will simply
be a set of surfaces. This may or may not be what you want.

Hi guys, thank you for your answers.

Actually, I was turning to Catia because I'm used ot it and and know
how to manipulate it and get into what I have in mind.
I don't know anything about Rhino and don't think I'll get the time to
learn how to play with it before the end of the project...

Moreover, some softwares are available at the computer lab and Rhino
isn't part of them (we have I-DEAS, Autocad, Pro E, IronCad, but I've
never used them).

Is there an other way to implement a tail ramp for instance on my
cargo a/c?

Thanks,

Jon

To model a tail ramp, just make a flat plate out a Fuse component (by making a rectanglur box). and place it on the back of the aircraft.  It's not in one component, but will permit articulation of up/down ramp to show clearance.  So this is pretty easy to do at a conceptual level in VSP.
