How do I export model which can be used in other analysing software such as ANSYS fluent etc.? I have tried using .stp but facing some problems.

I have been designing a couple of planes for some time. But now I would now like to analyze them using ANSYS fluent or something similar. The problem is whenever I export the model, the generated model in CAD software shows some inconsistencies with the model, which is due to the cambered airfoils used. The tail section uses symmetrical ones and don't show any problem. Now, is there any workaround for this, cause I cannot proceed with the project.

Its mainly the geometry problem. I want to export the model, so that I can use it in ANSYS, which supports .stp, however when exported, for example the wing which uses multiple cambered airfoil sections, plus the taper ratio, the final geometry is obtained. But now if I export that as .stp format, the cad software read it as several surfaces connected i.e. The wing upper surface is not made up of one but multiple "sheets" and some have gaps in it, which make it difficult to mesh in other software.

Rahul,

Our STEP file export creates files that some programs don't like.  In particular, some airfoil types like you see here.  We're in the process of re-working how we handle 6-series and File airfoils to alleviate this limitation.

Once we fix that, things should be better, but it is still likely that some programs will have trouble importing our STEP files.  This is because many programs do not fully implement STEP -- and if they don't import what we export, then we're out of luck.

Hi Rob,

Is there any update on exporting VSP geometries for use in ANSYS? I'm having trouble with files only being partially exported, and programs such as ANSYS and Solidworks then only reading the fuselage, not the wings.

Thanks for your continued development of VSP.

I've heard from users that IGES seems to work better than STEP for OpenVSP created files to SolidWorks.

I don't really have any specific information about ANSYS.

Please keep us informed of your specific experience.
