Structuralists,

I am transitioning from OpenVSP 2 and SAM.  Main current problem: ORIENTATION statements in simple Wing CalculiX .inp files (prior to adding the Vspaero loads).  Specifics in Bold below.

These "ORIENTATION" errors are listed in the Command Prompt window (upon submitting the .inp file (excerpted below) to Calculix:

[Environment: OpenVSP 3.43 on Win 11.  CalculiX Version 2.10 from download of CalculiX-GE-OSS-2.10-win-x64.zip from Cesare Guardino's GE site.  Same results with OpenVSP 3.3x,3.40 and earlier CalculiX's; and on Win 10 on another machine.]

[Goal: Structural analyses of varying wing skin thicknesses and rib/spar layouts for light-sport size traditional config aircraft.]

Thanks,

Peter Schwenn

Just a guess -- someone with more experience with CalculiX will probably have to jump in.

I think there are some bugs in CalculiX around long names.  Between the structure name, geom name, and part name, OpenVSP builds up a pretty long name.

You might try shortening all the names and see if that helps at all.

Rob

Rob,

I'll give that a try.

Thanks,

Peter S

I shortened all the names the user can change and so the built-up names in the CalculiX .inp are all much shorter.  No change, so that's not it (in this case).  I looked in the Calculix doc for *ORIENTATION  parameter's definition and use but the examples I found were not helpful.

I will look for the cause elsewhere.

thanks,

Peter Schwenn.

Hi Peter,
The output you pasted is for CGX, the graphical interface for Calculix. It ignores most things besides *ELEMENT, *NODE, *DLOAD, *CLOAD, and some others I presume. If you run CCX, the solver, you will not get those errors.

If you are looking for a way to visualize the orientations, I suggest using VSPViewer. PreProMax is also a good visualization software for Calculix models, however it doesn't explicitly support *ORIENTATION (you can add it as a custom keyword though).

Best,
James
