How VSP calculates aspect ratio when dihedral is involved

Hello friends,

I am building a model in VSP referencing some geometric data I have about an airplane.

While the total span and total area line up fairly well with the existing geometric data, aspect ratio is very far off from the actual value.

It seems that instead of using total span, VSP is using projected span and total area for aspect ratio calculation when dihedral is involved. I could be wrong, and I would like some confirmation on how aspect ratio is actually calculated.

You are correct, the 'Total' Aspect Ratio is calculated based on projected span.

However, OpenVSP doesn't use this aspect ratio for anything -- so if it doesn't suit your needs or expectations, just ignore it.
